Chapter 1 - The Hand on the Screen

Emma Bennett heard the splash before she saw her daughter.

She burst through the mansion doors with two police officers only steps behind her.

Then she saw the glass tank.

And Sophie.

For one impossible second, Emma’s body refused to understand what her eyes were seeing.

Her infant daughter was beneath the water.

Eleanor Vale stood beside the enormous rectangular tank in a shimmering champagne gown, one hand still resting near the transparent lid.

“My baby!”

Emma ran.

She threw the lid open and reached into the water.

Her hands found Sophie.

She pulled her daughter upward, lifting her face above the surface first and bringing her completely against her chest.

Sophie cried.

That sound broke Emma.

“Oh, God...”

She held the soaked infant upright against her shoulder, rubbing her back, sobbing into wet hair.

“Mommy’s here. I’ve got you.”

One officer immediately called for medical support while the other moved toward Eleanor.

Eleanor stepped backward.

For first time, her composure cracked.

Then Ethan entered.

He had been summoned from a charity dinner across town after Emma called him screaming that Sophie had disappeared from nursery.

He stopped in doorway.

Soaked baby.

Open tank.

Emma trembling.

Police surrounding Eleanor.

“What happened?”

Emma couldn't answer.

An officer could.

“We have security footage.”

He opened video on phone.

“Watch who gave Eleanor the baby.”

Ethan stared.

The footage showed Eleanor standing beside tank.

Then someone approached from camera’s blind side.

The person never fully entered frame.

Only an arm.

A hand.

And a ring.

Sophie was passed into Eleanor’s arms.

Ethan leaned closer.

His face changed.

“That ring…”

The officer moved finger toward next frame.

Eleanor lunged forward.

“Ethan, don’t!”

Police stopped her.

Ethan looked from Eleanor back to screen.

He knew that ring.

Heavy gold.

Oval black stone.

A narrow silver fracture through center.

His father, Thomas Bennett, had worn it for twenty-seven years.

But Thomas Bennett had been dead for six.

And the ring had been buried with him.

At least that was what Ethan had always believed.

Sophie was taken immediately for emergency evaluation.

She was frightened and exhausted, but doctors told Emma and Ethan something neither dared expect:

She had been rescued quickly.

She was breathing.

She was stable.

They would continue monitoring her carefully.

Emma sat beside hospital crib and refused to leave.

Ethan stood at window.

His hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Detective Maya Torres entered shortly after midnight.

“Eleanor has requested attorney.”

“Good,” Ethan said. “She can request one from jail.”

Maya didn't react.

“We need understand what happened before tank.”

“She tried to kill my daughter.”

“The footage appears to show deliberate act. We’re preserving all evidence.”

“Appears?”

“We don't skip investigation because first image is horrifying.”

Emma turned.

“Who handed her Sophie?”

“That’s what we're determining.”

Ethan answered before Maya could continue.

“My father.”

Emma stared.

“Ethan.”

“I know that ring.”

“Your father is dead.”

“I know.”

Maya placed still image on table.

“Could anyone else own similar ring?”

“No.”

“Was it unique?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Ethan swallowed.

“My grandfather had it made for him.”

“Where is it now?”

“With my father.”

“Meaning?”

“In his coffin.”

Silence.

Maya studied him.

“Are you certain?”

Ethan almost said yes.

Then remembered funeral.

Closed casket after private family viewing.

His mother had handled personal effects.

Ethan had never actually watched anyone place ring on Thomas’s hand.

He had simply been told.

By Eleanor.

Not Eleanor Vale.

His own mother, Eleanor Bennett, who died three years after Thomas.

Maya asked:

“Who currently has access to your parents’ stored belongings?”

Ethan looked up.

A room in mansion had remained locked since mother’s death.

The family archive room.

And Eleanor Vale—the woman who had put Sophie in tank—had been managing Bennett estate inventory for almost two years.

She could have accessed it.

Then Emma’s phone rang.

Mansion evidence team.

They had opened archive room.

Thomas Bennett’s ring box was inside.

Empty.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

Four words:

RETURN IT TO DANIEL.

Ethan went still.

Emma whispered:

“Who’s Daniel?”

Ethan stared at note.

“My brother.”

Emma blinked.

“You don't have a brother.”

May you like

Ethan slowly shook his head.

“Not anymore.”
