Chapter 7 - The Letter in the Paper

Once the door was secured, Ethan turned back to Emma, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. He pulled a chair close to her, his voice dropping into a whisper that barely carried across the room.
“Tell me everything,” he commanded, his eyes locked onto hers.
Emma took a deep, shuddering breath, her hands steadying as Leo finally drifted into a deep, milk-drunk sleep under the white blanket. She reached into the pocket of her black apron, pulling out a small, folded piece of thick paper stamped with a familiar, personal wax seal.
“Your wife didn't have an accident, Mr. Vance,” Emma whispered, her voice trembling as she handed him the document. “Two weeks before she died, she discovered that Marcus and several board members were systematically draining the family’s offshore trust accounts. When she threatened to go to the authorities, they... they made sure her car wouldn't stop.”

Ethan unfolded the paper. Inside was a hand-written list of account numbers, transaction dates, and a final, desperate warning from Victoria, detailing the tampering she had discovered on her own vehicle’s brake lines.
“She knew she was running out of time,” Emma said, her voice cracking. “She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to stay close to Leo and wait until you were ready to see the truth.”
