Chapter 14 - The Return

A week after the escape, the storm had finally settled, leaving behind a quiet, cold renewal.
Ethan stood in the center of the grand hall back at the New York estate, his hands tucked into his pockets as he looked around the quiet space. The heavy oak door to the nursery had been repaired, returning the room to its former splendor, though the memory of the violence that had taken place there still lingered in the quiet air.
Marcus and his co-conspirators had been arrested and were currently held without bail on charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder. The Vance corporate empire had been restored to Ethan’s full control, the stolen funds returned to the family trust.
Emma walked down the grand staircase, wearing a soft cream knit sweater, her chestnut waves falling gently around her face. She held Leo in her arms, the baby awake and looking around the grand hall with curious, round blue eyes.
Ethan walked over to her, his large hand gently cradling the back of his son’s head as he looked down at them, a genuine, soft smile appearing on his face for the first time in years.

“You don't have to wear the uniform anymore, Emma,” Ethan said gently, his voice carrying a warmth that had been missing from the house for too long. “You’re part of this family now.”
Emma looked up at him, her warm brown eyes filled with a deep, quiet gratitude. “Thank you, Ethan,” she whispered.
