Chapter 15 - The New Hand

Six months later, spring arrived at the estate. The cold, dark memory of the escape had faded under the bright afternoon sun, replaced by blooming white roses and lush green lawns.

Emma sat on a stone bench in the estate’s private gardens, watching Leo play on a soft blanket spread across the green grass. The baby giggled loudly, reaching his tiny hands toward a small, soft plush toy, his movements healthy, strong, and full of life.

Ethan walked down the stone path, carrying two glasses of iced tea. He handed one to Emma and sat beside her on the bench, his dark suit replaced by a simple dark sweater and trousers. He watched his son play with a soft, peaceful expression, the heavy shadow of his grief finally lifting.

Emma reached down and gently adjusted the baby’s blanket, her thumb catching the edge of the gold locket still hanging beneath her collar. She looked at Ethan, a quiet, peaceful smile on her lips.

“We did it, Ethan,” she said softly. “Leo is safe.”

Ethan smiled, wrapping a protective, warm arm around her shoulder. “We did,” he agreed quietly.

As he looked toward the distant hills, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out, opening a new encrypted text message from his chief security officer. Attached to the message was a photograph of a second gold locket, almost identical to Victoria’s, that had just been recovered from a private safety deposit box in London—a locket containing a photograph of Emma as a child, alongside a woman whose face matched Victoria's exactly, and a hand-written note: For my daughter, Emma. To be opened when the first locket is returned.

Ethan looked from the screen to Emma, his heart hammering in his chest as he realized the secret of the maid went far deeper than his wife's death, leaving a new, unbroken shadow waiting to be revealed.
