Chapter 6 - The Watcher in the Hall

Ethan spun around, instantly standing and positioning his broad frame between Emma and the door, his hand instinctively moving toward his waist where his holster usually rested.

The nursery door opened, and Marcus Vance—Ethan’s cousin and the head of the estate’s private security—stepped into the room. He was a sleek, calculating man in a dark gray suit, his eyes immediately sweeping the space, taking in the maid, the baby, and the high marble cabinet where Ethan’s gun was visible.

“Is everything alright in here, Ethan?” Marcus asked, his voice smooth, professional, but carry an underlying tension. “One of the staff mentioned the new maid was up here without permission.”

Ethan’s face was an impenetrable mask of cold authority. “She was assisting with the child, Marcus,” he said, his voice flat and commanding. “Leo is finally feeding. I expect the staff to leave her to her duties.”

Marcus’s eyes lingered on Emma for a fraction of a second, a subtle, unreadable expression passing over his face before he offered a polite nod. “Of course. We’ll keep the hallway clear.” He stepped back, closing the door behind him, but the click of the latch felt like the start of a countdown.
