Chapter 8 - A Chase Through the Night
Ethan didn't hesitate.
He pulled Lily tightly against his chest, wrapping his overcoat around her to shield her from the freezing wind, and sprinted after Claire through the city's narrow back alleys.
Behind them, car doors slammed.
Heavy footsteps pounded against the pavement.
Someone was coming after them.
Claire led Ethan into an abandoned parking garage beneath a deserted building. Her heels echoed sharply against the concrete floor as they hurried deeper into the darkness.
Ethan suddenly grabbed her arm and pulled her behind a massive support column.
He gently covered her mouth with one hand while using the other to soothe Lily, patting the baby's back to keep her from crying.
Two men in black suits, each wearing a communication earpiece, hurried past their hiding place.
"Search every corner!" one of them barked into his radio. "That woman couldn't have gotten far with the baby. The boss wants the child's DNA sample and that necklace recovered at any cost!"
Ethan waited until their footsteps faded.
Then he slowly removed his hand from Claire's mouth.
His chest rose and fell as anger and confusion fought for control.
"A DNA sample?" he whispered.
He looked down at the sleeping baby in his arms before turning his piercing blue eyes toward Claire.
"Who is this child to me, Claire? Who the hell is Lily?"
A tear rolled down Claire's cheek.
"She's not your daughter, Ethan."
