The quiet alley seemed to grow dead silent as the cold wind brushed past them. Ethan slowly looked up from Lily’s face to meet Claire’s wide, terrified gaze.
“How does she know me?” Ethan asked, his voice barely above a whisper, filled with a mixture of confusion and growing dread.
Claire’s trembling hand reached out toward the gold pendant in the baby’s hand, but she hesitated, pulling her fingers back before touching it. A fresh tear slipped silently down her cheek, sparkling under the amber streetlight.
“That necklace… where did you get it?” Claire asked, her voice shaking violently.
Ethan instinctively closed his broad hand over Lily’s tiny fingers and the gold pendant, pulling both the necklace and the child closer against his chest.
