Chapter 13 - A Gunshot in the Fog
"GET DOWN!"
Ethan's roar shattered the silence.
He threw himself toward Claire and Lily, pulling them both behind a concrete barrier.
A muffled gunshot cracked through the night.
The bullet struck the concrete inches from their heads, sending dust and fragments spraying into the air.
Claire screamed and curled protectively around Lily.
The baby burst into frightened sobs.
Ethan reached beneath his jacket and drew the handgun he always carried while working high-level security assignments.
He cautiously raised himself above the barrier.
Three shots rang out in rapid succession.
He fired toward the steel bridge, where the red laser had originated.
A sharp metallic clang echoed through the darkness.
Then came the sound of something heavy crashing into the water below.
"GO!" Ethan ordered, pulling Claire to her feet. "There's a motorboat at the south dock!"
They sprinted toward the deserted pier.
Ethan spotted a small motorboat tied to a wooden post.
He quickly cut the mooring line, jumped behind the controls, and started the engine.
The motor roared to life.
The boat surged forward, slicing through the fog-covered river.
Behind them, sirens wailed along the shore.
