Trapped against the wall, Claire pressed her palms against the rough brickwork behind her. Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks.
“Please… you don’t understand,” Claire pleaded softly, her voice cracking under the weight of her distress.
“Then tell me!” Ethan snapped, his jaw clenching as he held her gaze.
At the sound of his raised voice, Lily stirred in Ethan’s arms. Her crying quieted down to a soft, hiccuping sigh. As her watery blue eyes blinked open, her attention was caught by a gleam of metal at Ethan’s collar.
