Chapter 1 - The Box in the Shadows

The damp pavement of the city sidewalk glistened under the warm amber glow of streetlights, reflecting a soft blue haze from the midnight sky. A gentle autumn breeze swept past a row of parked cars, carrying a bitter chill that cut through the silence of the empty street.
Inside an open cardboard box lined with a thick cream blanket, one-year-old Lily huddled against the cold. Her pale-pink knitted onesie offered little protection against the night air. Tears spilled over her rosy cheeks, pooling in her enormous watery blue eyes. Her tiny lower lip trembled as she stretched her small arms over the rough cardboard edge, desperately reaching into the dark.
“Da… da…” Lily babbled through her sobs, her voice tiny and terrified.

A few steps down the sidewalk, thirty-year-old Claire paused. Her elegant beige wool coat blew gently around her ivory dress, her long golden hair catching the dim streetlight. Her striking blue eyes glistened with tears she tried in vain to suppress.
Claire glanced back at the cardboard box, her delicate features twisted in agony. She took a half-step toward the crying baby, her hands trembling inside her coat pockets. But with a sharp, ragged breath, she forced herself to turn away, taking swift, hesitant steps into the shadows.
