Chapter 9 - What Edward Knew
Edward discovered Claire survived in 2009.
Why didn't he tell Richard?
Miriam Shaw explained.
Edward received anonymous copy of corrected fire record.
He hired investigator.
Investigator located Claire Morgan, then seventeen, living happily with Morgans.
Edward wanted contact.
Attorney warned Claire was minor and her guardians had protected privacy.
Edward contacted Helen Morgan once through counsel.
Helen said:
“Claire does not know Richard Hale is her biological father. Julia asked us to keep Hale family away until Claire is adult.”
Edward respected? Or cowardice.
He chose not tell Richard because Richard would immediately seek Claire.
Was that his decision to make?
No.
Again family pattern.
At eighteen Claire discovered Whitmore records herself.
But she did not find Richard until twenty-four.
Edward died before that.
Why not leave Richard letter?
He did.
Miriam had sealed instructions release if Richard independently discovered Claire or if Claire requested Hale family records.
Neither contacted Miriam.
Richard had hired different law firm.
Thus affidavit sat.
Another overcomplicated attempt at respecting privacy became years of silence.
Claire read Edward’s words:
Julia never told me where she placed Claire. I learned too late. Richard should have been given choice, but I feared he would treat discovery as battle rather than relationship. That was unfair to him and to Claire.
Richard’s eyes filled.
Then affidavit addressed Ashford.
Edward admitted he knew Martin Vale and Lawrence Whitmore stole relocation funds by 2000.
He pressured them privately to repay.
Why not report?
Because Martin threatened release confidential addresses of domestic-violence relocation recipients whose records were mixed into escrow.
Edward believed quiet recovery protected residents.
He chose secrecy.
Some money restored.
Some not.
Wrong governance.
Potential legal violations.
But motive mixed.
He later created independent restitution reserve.
Then:
Julia was correct that secrecy protects institutions more reliably than people.
Claire read twice.
This whole story echoed.
Then affidavit said Edward suspected one Hale employee had provided Martin information about Julia’s movements.
Not Richard.
Not Edward.
Name redacted in copy.

She opened under instructions.
Name:
PETER LANG.
Richard frowned.
Former Hale security coordinator.
Peter had access fleet schedules.
He may have told Martin when Edward surveillance stopped.
Was he following Julia in green Buick? No, Darrow vehicle.
But Peter may have leaked.
Peter died 2018.
Payroll showed unexplained $8,000 payment from Lawrence Whitmore in 1998.
Likely corruption.
Did Peter cause fire?
No evidence.
Did Martin/Lawrence?
No evidence.
Julia died accidental electrical fire after being pressured and followed.
Fraud created fear around her, but fire itself remained accident.
Then Claire asked:
“Why did fake Adrian tell Ethan Richard was paying me?”
Caleb wanted frame Claire’s investigation as conflict-of-interest scheme so Ethan would remove her from Ashford due diligence.
“Why reveal Richard is my father at all?”
Because it was true and therefore made fabricated lies credible.
Then Claire looked at Ethan.
“You didn't know Richard was my father because I never told you.”
“Yes.”
“Why did that make you think I was conning you?”
“Because Caleb made every omission look deliberate.”
“It was deliberate. Just not for reason he claimed.”
Claire had kept Richard private because relationship complicated and Robert Morgan remained father in her emotional life.
She had planned tell Ethan eventually.
She waited too long.
But secrecy did not justify violence.
Then Ethan said something unexpected:
“I knew Richard before I met you.”
Claire stared.
Richard looked equally surprised.
“How?”
Ethan answered:
“Not personally.”
His father, David Mercer, had worked for Hale Development in 1998.
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“What did he do?”
