Chapter 13 - Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale was not Claire’s secret father.

DNA already settled Richard.

He was Richard’s older half-brother.

Estranged from Hale family since 2003.

Why was he with Julia night before fire?

Nathan was attorney.

In 1998 he represented tenants challenging Ashford relocations.

Julia contacted him with ledger.

Perfectly legitimate.

Richard had never known because Nathan and Richard were barely speaking then.

Nathan, now sixty-six, lived in Maine.

He agreed interview.

“Yes. I met Julia.”

“Why didn't you tell Richard?”

“Julia asked me not to.”

Again.

She feared Richard would confront father and Lawrence before evidence secured.

Nathan helped her prepare complaint to state housing inspector.

Did she file?

Draft completed.

She died before signature.

Nathan still had copy.

Why never file afterward?

He did.

Three weeks after fire.

Inspector opened review.

But confidential settlement and restitution closed most administrative claims.

This wasn't hidden from government, just absent from family story.

Nathan had not disappeared because Julia.

His estrangement came years later over unrelated Hale business dispute.

Then why Caleb kept photograph?

Martin Vale had surveillance photos.

Caleb inherited files.

He used one to imply Julia had secret relationship with Hale brother if needed.

Another misleading truth fragment.

Claire almost laughed bitterly.

“How many ways did he plan to make me doubt my family?”

“As many as worked,” Nathan said.

Then Nathan revealed Julia’s last words to him.

“If anything happens, don't let them turn Claire into reason everyone fights.”

That landed hard.

For twenty-eight years adults had done exactly that.

Not intentionally always.

But Claire became symbol:

Richard’s lost daughter.

Eleanor? Not in this story.

Edward’s guilt.

Catherine’s secrecy.

Caleb’s leverage.

Ethan’s suspicion.

Claire finally said:

“I am not anybody’s evidence.”

Richard nodded.

Then Nathan gave her draft complaint.

It named:

Lawrence Whitmore.

Martin Vale.

Peter Lang as suspected information leak.

It explicitly cleared:

Richard Hale — no knowledge found.

Edward Hale — learned late; response inadequate but no evidence personal diversion.

David Mercer — attempted halt surveillance; later redirected recovered funds to housing.

That closed historical culpability.

Then Claire asked about Julia fire.

Nathan had wondered too.

State investigators reviewed because timing suspicious.

Electrical accident remained conclusion.

No evidence defendants caused.

Julia’s death was tragic coincidence in middle of real financial scandal.

Claire accepted because evidence mattered more than dramatic answer.

Then Nathan said:

“There is one thing you should know about Richard.”

Richard stiffened.

Claire looked between them.

Nathan continued:

“After he thought you died, Richard paid into scholarship every year on your birthday.”

Richard looked away.

Not secret inheritance.

He simply couldn't stop marking day.

When he discovered Claire alive, he converted fund into grants for foster youth rather than hand it to her.

Claire smiled faintly.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Richard almost answered “I didn't want—”

Then stopped.

He had learned.

“I was embarrassed by how sentimental it sounds.”

Claire laughed for first time.

“That’s terrible reason.”

“I know.”

Then Ethan’s attorney contacted Claire.

Ethan wanted deliver written apology and accept no-contact boundaries.

Claire accepted letter through counsel.

She did not invite him back.

In it:

Caleb lied to me. I chose to believe him. Then I chose to frighten you. Those are separate facts. The first does not excuse second.

Claire folded it.

That was at least truthful.

Then prosecutors found Caleb’s laptop contained folder titled:

HALE / WHITMORE.

Everything fit.

But another folder sat beside it.

MORGAN / CLAIRE.

Created before Mercer Ashford purchase was announced.

Claire frowned.

If Caleb targeted her only to protect Ashford sale, why had he begun collecting information about her earlier?

Forensics opened folder.

Inside was one scanned letter.

From Julia.

Dated six months before fire.

Addressed to Martin Vale.

One sentence was highlighted:

Claire must never learn what happened at Bellweather House.

May you like

Richard whispered:

“What is Bellweather House?”
