Chapter 4 - The Father Julia Tried to Erase

DNA was not ambiguous.

Richard was Claire’s biological father.

Three tests existed.

One commissioned by Claire.

One by Richard.

One later performed during medical treatment with both consent.

All confirmed.

So why would Julia tell Morgans Richard was not father?

Helen explained context.

Julia arrived frightened and exhausted.

She asked Morgans keep Claire for few days.

She said:

“If anyone named Hale asks, Richard isn't her father.”

Helen interpreted literally.

Years later she realized Julia may have been instructing them what to say, not stating truth.

Julia wanted Claire hidden from someone who might use Richard’s name.

“Who?”

“She never told us.”

Then Claire asked:

“Did she say Richard was dangerous?”

“No.”

That surprised everyone.

Julia said:

“Richard doesn't know who is standing behind him.”

Not Richard himself.

Someone around him.

Richard began remembering 1998.

At time he worked for Hale Development under father, Edward Hale.

Their company competed for municipal redevelopment contracts.

Whitmore Residential Services subcontracted on several projects.

Lawrence Whitmore knew Richard professionally.

Could Lawrence have wanted Claire hidden because she connected Julia to Richard?

Perhaps.

But Lawrence died in 2009 after conviction for tax fraud unrelated.

Old housing-payroll allegations never charged.

Then fake Adrian’s purpose became clearer.

He wanted Ethan believe Claire and Richard were secretly collaborating.

Why involve Ethan?

Ethan owned Mercer Residential Capital.

His company was preparing to purchase portfolio of old redevelopment properties.

Among them:

three former Hale/Whitmore sites from 1990s.

Claire had been helping Ethan review community-impact records.

She recognized one property name:

Ashford Court.

Her mother once worked there.

She told Ethan she wanted examine archive.

Two weeks later fake Adrian appeared.

So manipulation began after Claire showed interest in Ashford Court.

Not romance.

Not paternity.

Property.

Ethan looked sick.

“I thought she was using me to get records.”

Claire answered:

“I was trying to find my mother.”

Then bank transfer.

$380,000 supposedly from Ethan account to Claire company.

Independent bank review found transfer authorization initiated but blocked before settlement.

No money actually left.

Ethan’s mobile banking screenshot had been altered.

Someone wanted him believe theft occurred.

The attacker exploited Ethan’s distrust.

Richard said:

“That does not absolve you.”

“I know.”

Ethan did not argue.

Claire asked Richard:

“What is at Ashford Court?”

Richard hesitated.

“Old tenant-relocation records.”

“Why would anyone care twenty-eight years later?”

Because 1998 redevelopment had displaced eighty-six households.

Most compensated.

Seven files contested.

One belonged to Julia Whitmore.

Claire stared.

“My mother was tenant?”

“No. Auditor.”

Julia had discovered relocation payments recorded for seven families who said they never received full amount.

Approximately $610,000.

Richard’s father Edward approved contractor reports.

Lawrence Whitmore processed them.

Richard was junior manager.

“Did you steal it?”

“No.”

“Did your father?”

“I don't know.”

Then Richard admitted something he had hidden from Claire for six years.

Julia called him night before she left Claire with Morgans.

She said:

“I found where the seven payments went.”

Richard asked where.

Julia refused phone.

They arranged meeting next day.

She never came.

Claire’s voice shook.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I had no proof.”

“That isn't answer.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid your first question would be whether my family caused your mother’s death.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then you should have trusted me with uncertainty.”

Richard nodded.

Another person withholding unfinished truth.

Then Ethan examined fake dossier.

One page referenced:

ASHFORD SEVEN — WITNESS C.W.

Claire frowned.

“C.W. is me?”

Richard looked closer.

Document dated 1998.

Claire was two.

Impossible.

Unless C.W. meant someone else.

Richard whispered:

“Not Claire Whitmore.”

“Then who?”

His eyes widened.

“Catherine Whitmore.”

Claire stared.

“Who is Catherine?”

Richard looked toward old photograph in dossier.

A woman stood beside Julia.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

Richard whispered:

May you like

“Julia’s sister.”

Claire had never been told Julia had a sister.
