Chapter 6 - Edward Hale’s Car

Edward Hale had followed Julia.

That sounded damning.

Archive told more complicated story.

Edward’s driver, Samuel Price, was still alive.

Seventy-eight.

He remembered Julia.

Edward ordered Samuel follow her for two days.

Why?

Edward believed Lawrence Whitmore knew Julia had copied payroll records and might intimidate her.

He wanted security without alarming her.

Bad decision.

Secret surveillance.

But protective intent.

Samuel said Edward never approached Julia.

Then on third day Edward stopped surveillance because Julia confronted him.

She shouted:

“If you actually want to help, stop treating me like evidence.”

Edward apologized.

Samuel remembered because Edward rarely apologized.

So Hale car was not proof threat.

Then Samuel mentioned another car.

Dark green Buick.

It followed Julia after Hale surveillance stopped.

Samuel wrote plate because suspicious.

That plate traced to municipal contractor:

Darrow Claims Administration.

Company that processed Ashford relocation claims.

Its 1998 director:

Martin Vale.

Not fake Adrian.

But perhaps connection.

Martin Vale died 2020.

His son:

Caleb Vale.

Age fifty-two.

Photograph.

Scar beneath left ear.

Claire stared.

The man outside mansion.

Fake Adrian was Caleb Vale.

Now they had name.

Why would Caleb manipulate Ethan?

Darrow Claims Administration had certified seven disputed payments.

If Julia’s files proved claims fraudulent, company reputation and perhaps civil liability could be reopened.

But 28 years later? Statutes, settlements, corporate dissolution. Could still be reputational or reveal something else.

Caleb currently served as trustee of Vale Community Foundation.

Foundation was negotiating sale of land to Ethan’s Mercer Residential Capital.

One parcel:

Ashford Court.

If old title restrictions existed, sale could collapse.

Money at stake: $18 million.

Now motive became concrete.

Caleb wanted Claire discredited before she found records affecting sale.

But why tell Ethan Richard was Claire father?

To frame investigation as Hale family scheme.

Why fake $380k theft?

To turn Ethan against Claire.

Why was Caleb at mansion reception?

He was invited guest through transaction.

He had been watching confrontation.

Claire’s face tightened.

“He knew what Ethan might do.”

Ethan looked down.

Caleb manipulated.

Ethan chose violence.

Both truths remained.

Richard asked Claire whether she wanted police.

“Yes.”

Ethan did not resist.

Claire gave statement about assault.

Ethan gave his.

He would face consequences appropriate under law; Richard did not use wealth to bury it.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did Caleb use Adrian Cole’s name?”

Because Dr. Adrian Cole signed correction proving Claire survived fire.

Caleb wanted Ethan find real document under fake name, making alias seem credible.

Sophisticated psychological manipulation.

Then detectives found Caleb had boarded flight? Better not easy villain escape. He was interviewed, denied impersonation. Evidence insufficient initially.

He claimed someone stole copy of his ID? But mansion cameras place him.

Claire identified.

Investigation continued.

Then Richard examined old Ashford map.

Seven disputed units marked.

One was Unit 4B.

Julia’s temporary office.

Fire that killed her occurred at different address.

Yet city archive showed 4B sealed one day after fire.

Reason:

HAZARDOUS STRUCTURAL CONDITION.

Richard frowned.

Ashford Court had remained occupied another year.

Why seal only Julia’s office?

Claire asked:

“What was inside?”

May you like

Richard looked at her.

“Whatever your mother found.”
