Chapter 10 - Ethan’s Father

Ethan had not known significance until now.
David Mercer served as regional operations manager for Hale Development from 1996 to 2002.
Peter Lang reported to him.
Richard remembered David.
Competent.
Quiet.
Left after internal dispute.
Ethan was ten in 1998.
No childhood conspiracy.
No secret family relation.
When Caleb approached Ethan, he showed an old memo signed by David.
SUBJECT: WHITMORE — DISCONTINUE CONTACT.
Ethan interpreted as father having investigated Julia.
He never told Claire because David had died five years earlier and Ethan wanted verify.
Caleb claimed Richard had ordered David monitor Julia.
False.
Original memo recovered from company archive.
Full text:
DISCONTINUE CONTACT WITH JULIA WHITMORE IMMEDIATELY. MR. EDWARD HALE HAS ORDERED ALL INFORMAL SURVEILLANCE ENDED. ANY FURTHER CONTACT REQUIRES COUNSEL APPROVAL.
David was stopping surveillance.
Caleb cropped context.
Then another memo showed David suspected Peter Lang leaking schedules.
He recommended suspension.
Edward delayed action three weeks pending evidence.
During those weeks Julia died.
Richard whispered:
“My father delayed.”
Not cause.
But failure.
Then David resigned years later partly because Edward refused publicly disclose full Ashford scandal.
Ethan learned his father had tried push transparency.
This explained why Caleb selected Ethan.
He knew Mercer family carried old resentment toward Hales.
Caleb weaponized true fragments.
Richard Hale biological father.
David Mercer conflict with Edward.
Ashford money missing.
Claire’s secret identity.
All true.
Then connected them falsely.
Claire asked:
“Did Caleb tell you Richard killed my mother?”
“Yes.”
“And you believed him?”
“I believed he might have.”
“Enough to attack me?”
Ethan looked at floor.
“I believed you were helping cover it up. But there is no sentence that makes what I did acceptable.”
Richard watched him.
No reconciliation.
No handshake.
Consequences remained.
Then police confirmed Caleb had fabricated bank transfer screenshot and false $2.4M Hale payment.
Charges related fraud, identity misuse and obstruction were considered by prosecutors.
Claire also pursued protective order against Ethan after assault.
Ethan complied.
He moved out of shared residence.
This story did not turn physical abuse into romantic misunderstanding.
But Claire still wanted answer to one question:
Who gave Caleb private DNA report proving Richard paternity?
Caleb maintained it arrived anonymously.
Envelope retained.
Forensics found no useful prints.
Postmark Richmond.
Inside copy contained laboratory accession number.
Lab audit showed report accessed eighteen months earlier by authorized account linked to:
MORGAN FAMILY LAW.
Claire froze.
Morgan.
Her adoptive family?
Helen knew Richard paternity only after Claire told her.
Robert Morgan had died four years ago.
Family attorney:
Stephen Morgan.
Robert’s younger brother.
Claire called Uncle Stephen.
He went silent when she mentioned report.
“Did you access my DNA results?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because someone asked me to verify Richard.”
“Who?”
Stephen hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Claire stared.
“Helen?”
“No.”
A chill moved through her.
May you like
Stephen said:
“Julia.”
