Ashford Court had been renovated repeatedly.
Original Unit 4B no longer existed as apartment.
But building records showed wall cavity preserved around old utility chase because asbestos remediation made demolition expensive.
Mercer Residential Capital had not yet purchased property.
Claire could not simply enter.
They obtained owner permission and professional inspection.
No dramatic wall-smashing.
No illegal break-in.
Behind old utility panel workers found rusted document box.
Not because Julia intentionally hid grand conspiracy? Could be.
Inside were carbon copies of seven relocation claims.
Each showed payment amounts larger than family receipts.
Difference totaled $612,400.
Money had been diverted.
Where?
A clearing account:
HARBOR MUNICIPAL ESCROW 17.
Richard recognized.
His father had once served on Harbor Housing Partnership board.
Claire looked at him.
“Your family account.”
“No. Municipal escrow administered by outside bank.”
Who authorized transfers out?
Martin Vale, Darrow Claims.
Lawrence Whitmore countersigned.
Edward Hale did not.
So primary fraud pointed Lawrence and Martin.
Then why did Edward offer Julia $250k?
They found letter.
Not hush money.
Edward offered independent whistleblower settlement including legal representation, relocation and lost wages because Julia’s employer was Hale subcontractor.
Language included confidentiality regarding tenant identities, not underlying fraud.
Julia mistrusted it.
Understandable.
Catherine had interpreted as payoff.
So Edward imperfect but not thief.
Then box contained Julia diary page:
RICHARD DOESN’T KNOW.
Claire held breath.
Next:
Do not tell Richard until I know whether Edward can control Martin. Richard will charge into this and ruin everything.
Richard almost laughed sadly.
“She knew me.”
Then:
If I have to leave, Claire goes to Helen first. Not because Richard is unsafe. Because anyone watching him can find her.
There.
Reason Claire hidden from Hales.
Julia feared surveillance through Richard.
Not Richard.
Not secret paternity.
Not hatred.
Then another page:
Catherine thinks I should take Claire and run. I won't make daughter live forever under false name. Forty-eight hours. Then I meet Richard.
Julia intended separation only temporary.
She died before meeting.
Claire cried.
For first time, she knew mother had planned reunite her with Richard.
Then final page had initials:
C.V.
Claire assumed Caleb Vale.
But in 1998 Caleb was twenty-four and worked for father’s firm.
Possible.
Line:
C.V. copied ledger tonight. Says he can prove Martin is moving money twice.
Caleb may have helped Julia.
That contradicted current villain role.
Richard said:
“Don't assume initials.”
They found 1998 Darrow employee list.
Another C.V.:
Charlotte Vance.
Accounts clerk.
Current whereabouts unknown.
Claire felt frustration.
Every answer opened another possibility.
Then police called.
They had evidence Caleb Vale impersonated Adrian Cole.
A hotel camera showed him meeting Ethan.
Laptop seized under warrant contained draft dossier.
But no proof he fabricated bank screenshot personally.
Caleb asked through lawyer to speak.
He admitted approaching Ethan.
Why?
He said:
“Because someone told me Claire Morgan was about to expose Richard Hale for killing Julia.”
Claire stared through interview-room glass.
Caleb continued:
“And I believed them.”
“Who told you?”
He gave name.
Claire had never heard.
Richard had.
His face went rigid.
“Impossible.”
Name:
Edward Hale.
