Chapter 1 - The Man at the Open Door

Claire’s palm slipped against the polished marble.

She tried to crawl backward, but fear had turned her arms weak. Her cream blouse was wrinkled, strands of dark hair stuck to her wet cheeks, and every breath came in short, broken gasps.

“Please... don’t!”

Ethan stood over her.

His chest rose hard beneath his open-collar white shirt. The anger in his face frightened Claire more than anything he had said.

Then the mansion’s front door opened.

Richard stepped inside.

He took two steps and stopped.

His eyes went first to Claire.

Then Ethan.

Then back to Claire’s raised arm protecting her head.

Something in Richard changed.

“Richard!”

Claire’s voice cracked with relief.

Richard crossed the foyer before Ethan could fully turn. He grabbed Ethan high across the shirt and hauled him away from Claire.

Ethan staggered, recovered and shoved back.

Richard barely moved.

The two men collided hard beside the wall, shoes scraping marble. Ethan tried to break Richard’s grip, but Richard drove him backward and planted himself between Ethan and Claire.

“You put your hands on my daughter?”

Ethan stopped.

Not from fear.

From confusion.

“Your... daughter?”

Richard’s grip loosened slightly.

His eyes narrowed.

He had expected denial.

Instead, Ethan looked genuinely stunned.

Then Richard asked:

“Who told you she was my daughter?”

Every trace of anger disappeared from Ethan’s face.

He looked toward the open front door.

Richard followed his gaze.

Outside, guests from the reception were crossing the circular drive.

One man in a charcoal suit abruptly turned away.

Claire saw him.

Her entire body stiffened.

“That’s him.”

The man walked faster.

Richard released Ethan.

“Who?”

Claire pointed with a shaking hand.

But the man had already disappeared behind a line of departing cars.

Ethan stared at Claire.

“Claire... who are you?”

She looked at him.

For a moment, Claire seemed less frightened of Ethan than of answering.

Then she whispered:

“Not the woman you were told I was.”

Richard went still.

“What does that mean?”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Ethan reached into his pocket and removed a folded document.

He threw it onto the marble between them.

Richard picked it up.

At the top was Claire’s photograph.

Under it:

CLAIRE MORGAN

SUBJECT IDENTITY VERIFIED

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: RICHARD HALE

Richard looked up.

“That’s true.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Richard did.

His expression changed.

Underneath was another line:

ORIGINAL NAME: CLAIRE WHITMORE

Richard slowly turned toward Claire.

She had gone pale.

“Whitmore?”

Claire began crying again.

Ethan stared at her.

“That’s the name of the woman who died twenty-eight years ago.”

Richard looked back at the page.

Claire finally spoke.

“I know.”

Then Richard saw the date beside Claire Whitmore’s death.

Claire had supposedly died when she was two years old.
