Chapter 8 - The Message From a Dead Man
Edward Hale had not contacted Caleb from grave.
The message was old.
Dated 2008.
Four years before Edward’s death.
Caleb produced letter:
If Claire Whitmore ever resurfaces, assume Richard has learned what happened to Julia. Do not approach Claire directly. Contact whoever stands closest to Richard and demand independent review.
No instruction to fabricate evidence.
No instruction attack Claire.
No instruction impersonate Adrian.
Caleb had twisted warning.
Why did Edward fear Richard learning what happened?
Richard read entire letter.
Second paragraph:
I failed Julia by allowing Martin Vale to negotiate after I knew his records were unreliable. I did not cause fire, but I helped create conditions that made her believe no institution would protect her.
Edward carried guilt.
Then:
Richard will think I paid Julia to disappear. I did not. The settlement was meant to protect her. If she died believing otherwise, that is mine to carry.
So not murder confession.
Then why “what happened to Julia”?
Perhaps Edward knew more.
Caleb admitted his father Martin told him Julia’s fire was accidental.
Martin also said Julia possessed ledger that could ruin Lawrence and Darrow.
After fire, Martin ordered Caleb retrieve business files from Ashford 4B.
Caleb did.

He assumed Julia moved it.
Years passed.
Then Mercer planned purchase.
Caleb feared box would surface.
He searched Claire Morgan, discovered her connection to Ethan.
How discover Richard paternity?

Unknown.

Claire asked:

“Yes.”
Caleb finally admitted Martin and Lawrence diverted Ashford relocation money.
Caleb discovered in 2001.

Caleb kept silent to protect family.

So Caleb was culpable.
But not Julia’s killer.

Still no evidence.

Claire insisted they inspect.

Origin near overloaded extension circuit.
No accelerant.
No forced entry.
Julia likely died accidentally.
That was painful precisely because no mastermind could be blamed.
Then identification.
Was body truly Julia?
Dental records matched.
Modern review of retained tissue? If available. Let's confirm via archived medical examiner sample mitochondrial? Better if available preserved specimen, DNA comparison Claire confirms maternal relation.
DNA established deceased woman was Claire’s biological mother.
Julia died in fire.
No fake death.
No living mother twist.
Claire finally had certainty.

Neighbor Melissa Crane.

No switched body.
So Julia’s death mystery largely closed.

“No.”

Three years after Richard believed Claire dead? He still believed until six years ago, yes.
