Chapter 9 - Nathan Was Part of M-17
Nathan believed his father was Robert Cole.
Helen’s late husband.
DNA said otherwise.
Nathan was also biological child of donor 214.
How?
Helen had fertility treatment in 1987 at Mercer clinic.
She conceived Nathan using donor sperm because Robert infertile.
She knew donor anonymous.
She did not know 214 was unauthorized research sample until 1992 scandal.
Then Voss told her.
Suddenly Helen wasn’t merely protecting hospital.
She was protecting her son’s identity.
Why would identity matter?
Donor 214’s sample source.
That was still sealed.
Helen feared disclosure because donor was not random lab participant.
Who was he?
Ethan expected some wealthy patriarch.
Wrong.
Donor 214 was Dr. Jonathan Vale, a medical resident who donated sample for research into sperm preservation in 1984.
Consent explicitly:
research only,
no reproductive use.
His samples were accidentally transferred into clinical donor bank during inventory migration.
Jonathan later became prominent federal health regulator.
When Mercer discovered error, administrators feared not only lawsuits but scandal involving regulator whose genetic material had been used without consent.
Jonathan himself was also victim.
Did he know?
Not until 1997.
He reported clinic privately to state authorities.
But by then Mercer practice had reorganized.
Some records lost.
Some sealed during settlements.
Jonathan demanded descendants be informed.
Why weren’t they?
Because legal counsel argued privacy of recipient families.
The result:
nobody got full truth.
Again institutional secrecy.
Jonathan died 2019.
No fortune.
No hidden empire.
No reason for descendants to fight over inheritance.
The secret was medical consent and identity.
Helen Cole had spent decades believing if Nathan learned, his entire sense of family would collapse.
So she concealed.
When Rebecca searched, Helen feared chain reaction.
Her “protection” became crimes.
Nathan learned truth during investigation.
He sat silently.
Then said:
“Robert Cole was my father.”
Genetics did not erase parenting.
Good.
That reduced sensational biological-parent trope.
Claire learned donor 214 was her biological father too.
Rebecca too.
Three paternal half-siblings:
Claire.
Rebecca.
Nathan.
None had known.
Sophie was Rebecca’s daughter.
Claire was Sophie’s biological aunt.
Nathan biological uncle.
That explained genetic confusion but did not redefine family relationships emotionally overnight.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why was Claire’s mother using Mercer clinic?”
Claire’s mother had undergone donor insemination in 1989.
Legal.
Consensual.
But wrong donor sample used.
She believed approved donor 173.
Actually 214.
Same labeling error.
At least six children affected.
Independent outreach began carefully.
No public names without consent.
Then one affected person refused contact.

Born 1993.
Identity sealed.
Not needed for current mystery.
Do not turn into sibling parade.
The central issue remained Sophie and Helen’s cover-up.
Then Rebecca met Margaret.
Margaret cried before speaking.
“I held you.”
Rebecca stared.
“You knew?”
“I knew a baby. I didn’t know what they did.”
Margaret described crescent mark.
Rebecca touched same spot beneath own ear.
She had it too.
Sophie inherited slight indentation.
There was visual clue.
Not mystical mark.
A minor familial anatomical feature.
Rebecca asked:
“Why didn’t you answer my letter?”
Margaret said:
“I thought it was a scam.”
That hurt.
But honest.
Rebecca replied:
“If you had answered, maybe Sophie wouldn’t have been taken.”
Margaret had no defense.
She simply said:
“You may be right.”
No absolution.
