Chapter 7 - Rebecca Had Not Been Kidnapped
Rebecca was found.
At a family shelter outside Baltimore.
Alive.
Safe.
Voluntarily hidden with legal assistance.
Why?
She discovered Sophie missing six days after birth.
Hospital discharged correct child to her.
At home, a woman claiming county nurse visited.
Rebecca allowed entry after seeing valid-looking credentials.
During visit Rebecca became dizzy.
Not drugged.
She had postpartum anemia and fainted.
When she woke, visitor gone.
So was Sophie.
Rebecca called police.
A missing infant report existed.
Why hadn’t it connected?
Because Sophie had been registered under Rebecca Dawson, while Claire’s baby switch occurred another state two days later.
No DNA cross-reference yet.
Then Rebecca received anonymous call.
Caller said Sophie would be returned if Rebecca stopped investigating adoption history.
She did not believe.
She went police again.
Then received photograph of Sophie beside current newspaper.
Alive.
Caller instructed:
do not contact Margaret.
stop asking about M-17.
Rebecca instead hired attorney and moved shelter for protection.
She never knew Sophie had been placed with Claire.
When authorities showed photograph, Rebecca collapsed.
“That’s my daughter.”
DNA confirmed.
Sophie belonged to Rebecca.
No question.
That was major payoff.
Margaret’s driveway interruption—
“No. She isn’t.”
—was correct.
Sophie was not Ethan’s child.
Not Claire’s.
She was Rebecca Dawson’s daughter.
But why place Sophie with Claire?
To create genetic confusion.
Because Claire and Rebecca were paternal half-sisters through donor 214.
A superficial kinship test could make Sophie appear related to Claire.
And someone had access to Ethan-compatible infant sample for fake paternity report.

This became next question.
Then Claire’s delivered baby was found.

Caregiver believed infant was legally transferred after maternal crisis.

Emily and David Ross.

The Rosses had no idea.
They believed embryo remained frozen.

Claire had gestated their genetic child.

No instant baby handoff.
Court appointed guardian ad litem.
Everyone handled carefully.
Two babies safe.
This mattered.
No lingering child peril used as cheap suspense.
Then investigators focused on switch.
Why Sophie into Claire’s home?
Nathan Cole’s records revealed he had secretly ordered genetic comparison after Claire’s pregnancy error.
He discovered Claire’s donor-214 lineage.
Then found Rebecca adoption inquiry in M-17 archive.
He realized two living descendants of historical scandal existed simultaneously:
Claire.
Rebecca.
He feared if they connected, 1992 cover-up would emerge.
But why switch their babies?
Nathan denied.
“I was trying to keep them apart.”
His access was suspicious.
But evidence showed he was in medical conference 600 miles away during hospital switch.
Could coordinate remotely.

Then Rebecca identified masked visitor’s voice from recording lineup.
Not Nathan.
A woman.

She was seventy-one and retired.
Rebecca listened.
