Laura was found in Vermont.
Not hiding from police.
She had hired attorney and was preparing disclosure.
She returned voluntarily.
Her first statement changed direction.
“I did not switch the babies.”
“Did you transfer wrong embryo?”
“Yes.”
Why admit?
Because she had discovered wrong embryo after transfer and failed report immediately.
How happened?
Clinic software migration mis-linked one storage location.
Claire’s scheduled embryo ID:
BC-4421.
Technician retrieved:
BC-4427.
Laura performed final verification but overlooked one digit.
Human error.
No conspiracy at transfer.
After positive pregnancy, audit caught discrepancy at nine weeks.
Laura informed clinic medical director, Dr. Nathan Cole.
Claire’s cousin?
No. Cole common surname. Better no relation.
Nathan Cole had no relation to Claire despite surname.
He instructed Laura not tell patient until confirm.
Then legal department discovered BC-4427 belonged to another couple:
Emily and David Ross.
They had stored embryo in 2021.
The clinic faced catastrophic error.
What should happen?
Inform everyone immediately.
Instead Nathan delayed.
Why?
He feared lawsuit and license consequences.
Laura objected.
Eventually Claire was told at seventeen weeks—but not full truth.
She was told embryo might have “label discrepancy” but likely genetically hers.
Claire hid from Ethan because divorce already hostile.
So Claire knew there was uncertainty during pregnancy.
She had lied about that too.
But current newborn switch?
Laura denied.
Hospital security supported she was never maternity ward.
Then who took Claire’s delivered baby?
Hospital nursery records revealed baby remained with Claire continuously except:
routine exam,
hearing screening,
two-hour observation for mild temperature instability.
During observation, one nurse signed handoff:
MARIA DAWSON.
No Maria Dawson employed there.
Badge ID belonged to retired nurse.
Video showed woman in scrubs, masked.
Face obscured.
She carried infant out in bassinet at 2:14 a.m.
Returned bassinet at 2:31.
Seventeen minutes.
Claire later received Sophie.
Thus switch occurred hospital.
The woman knew retired badge credentials.
Old system access.
Then Laura revealed why she wrote M-17.
During embryo-error investigation she searched old restricted archive.
She discovered same clinic lineage had documented newborn identity discrepancy in 1992.
Baby Girl Hart.
M-17 file included handwritten warning:
SECOND CHILD RELEASED UNDER FALSE MATERNAL NAME.
DO NOT USE DONOR 214 LINE WITHOUT DIRECT DESCENDANT VERIFICATION.
Laura believed clinic buried historical case.
She feared Claire’s embryo error might expose.
But donor 214 had nothing to do with wrong embryo BC-4427.
So why was Claire flagged M-17?
Because Claire herself was descendant of donor 214.
And someone had deliberately attached old restricted code to her modern chart.
Who?

N.COLE.
Nathan Cole.
The clinic director had been searching M-17 months before Claire’s transfer error.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
Then Laura gave Ethan one detail.
Nathan’s mother had worked at St. Catherine’s in 1992.
Name:
Helen Cole.
Margaret shook her head when told.
“I knew her.”
