Chapter 8 - Helen Cole’s Reason
Helen Cole was arrested after search warrant.
She did not deny taking Sophie.
She denied wanting harm.
Her explanation was warped but coherent.
In 1992 she was young nurse administrator under Samuel Voss.
Voss told her Baby Girl Grant had to be “temporarily relocated” while hospital resolved legal exposure.
Helen complied.
Then Voss falsified death.
By time Helen understood permanence, she was implicated.
She spent decades terrified.
When Rebecca began requesting adoption records in 2026, Helen panicked.
Nathan—her son—worked at descendant fertility clinic.
She warned him.
Nathan searched M-17.
He discovered Claire was another donor-214 descendant.
Then Claire’s wrong embryo transfer happened accidentally.
Helen saw opportunity.
If Rebecca’s Sophie could be placed with Claire, she believed genetic overlap would create confusion and keep Rebecca from proving original 1992 identity.
But how would that stop Rebecca?
It wouldn’t.
Helen’s plan was irrationally elaborate.
There had to be more.
Investigators pressed.
Helen admitted real goal:
force Claire and Margaret into private settlement before Rebecca reached authorities.
She intended reveal Sophie’s identity privately, use child as leverage to make family sign confidentiality agreement around M-17.
That was criminal and appalling.
Why would Margaret sign?
Because Helen believed Margaret had knowingly participated in 1992 cover-up.
She was wrong.
Margaret had only held baby overnight under false story.
Helen thought Helen Hart had told sister everything.
She had not.
Thus plan built on false assumption.
Helen Cole arranged:
Sophie taken from Rebecca,
Claire’s gestated baby moved to safe caregiver,
Sophie substituted into Claire’s bassinet,
anonymous messages to Claire,
fake Ethan paternity sample.
Where did Ethan-compatible sample come from?
Nathan.
Years earlier fertility clinic stored Ethan’s semen and embryos.
Nathan improperly accessed stored reference sample and constructed paternity test using laboratory control material representing an Ethan-related embryo sample.
The report showed Ethan as father because sample came from Ethan-and-Claire embryo genetic material? Embryo DNA would be child of Ethan, giving paternity. Yes.
Nathan had preserved biopsy sample from one of Ethan and Claire’s embryos during preimplantation testing.
He submitted it as infant cheek sample.
Thus report real lab analysis but wrong specimen.
Nathan admitted helping mother create report.
He claimed he did not know she had abducted Sophie.
He believed Sophie was child voluntarily surrendered by Rebecca during private adoption dispute.
Evidence:
Helen lied to him too.
But Nathan knew:
sample fraud,
record manipulation,
M-17 concealment.
Culpable.
Then why did Claire suddenly try to get Sophie “out of my house”?
Helen’s final message had warned:
MARGARET WILL RECOGNIZE HER.
Why?
The crescent mark?
Helen Cole remembered Margaret holding Rebecca in 1992.
She knew Margaret had stared at that mark.
When Margaret unexpectedly came to Claire’s property, Helen panicked.
She told Claire remove Sophie before Margaret saw.
Claire—already unstable from weeks of threats and lies—chose violent action herself.
No instruction excused.
Now central plot was largely clear.
But one thing remained.
Why did Helen Cole care so desperately about M-17 after thirty-four years?
Fear of prosecution alone?
Statutes complicated.
Many actors dead.
She was retired.
There was another reason.
M-17 did not document only Rebecca.
It listed six donor-214 births.
One name remained sealed.
