Chapter 2 - The Paternity Test Was Real—But Not Sophie’s
Independent testing took forty-eight hours.
Ethan refused shortcuts.
Samples were collected under witnessed chain of custody.
Ethan.
Claire.
Sophie.
Results:
Ethan Bennett excluded as Sophie’s biological father.
Claire Cole excluded as Sophie’s biological mother.
Ethan read twice.
Emma sat beside him.
“So Claire didn’t give birth to her?”
“Not biologically.”
That distinction mattered.
Medical records still showed Claire had delivered a baby six weeks earlier.
Hospital photographs confirmed pregnancy and delivery.
So where was the child Claire actually carried?
And whose baby was Sophie?
The private paternity report Claire gave Ethan was not fabricated.
The laboratory confirmed report number existed.
DNA profile on that report was genetically consistent with Ethan.
But the infant sample attached to it had not come from Sophie.
Someone had submitted another infant’s sample under Sophie’s identity.
That was first real payoff.
The paperwork was genuine.
The sample was wrong.
Claire’s attorney contacted Ethan.
Claire wanted immunity before speaking.
Ethan refused negotiate personally.
Authorities and counsel would handle.
But Claire gave one statement voluntarily:
“I thought Sophie was the baby I delivered until three days after I came home.”
Ethan stared at transcript.
Three days?
Claire claimed she noticed something.
The crescent indentation.
Her newborn at hospital did not have it.
She checked photographs.
Different ear.
Different hairline.
Different umbilical clamp marking.
She panicked.
Then received anonymous message:
THE CHILD WITH YOU IS SAFE.
SO IS YOURS.
DO NOT TEST AGAIN.
Why not call police?
Claire said she feared whoever switched babies had access to hospital.
Weak.
Then another message arrived containing information only Claire and Ethan knew about their frozen embryo dispute.
It said:
IF ETHAN LEARNS THIS CHILD ISN’T HIS, YOUR DAUGHTER DISAPPEARS FOR GOOD.
Claire complied.
She presented old paternity report using sample supplied by anonymous sender.
Why attack Sophie now?
That remained unanswered.
Because protecting a switched baby for three days did not explain throwing her into a trash bin six weeks later.
Ethan demanded full chronology.
Claire eventually admitted the messages changed.
At first:
keep Sophie safe.
Later:
keep Sophie away from Ethan.
Then yesterday:
ETHAN IS COMING.
REMOVE THE CHILD FROM THE HOUSE BEFORE HE SEES HER LEFT EAR.
Claire interpreted “remove” as send away.
But when Margaret unexpectedly arrived and Claire realized visit had begun, panic escalated.
She made horrific choice.
No instruction told her to hurt Sophie.
No one forced her to put baby in bin.
That was Claire’s responsibility.
Then investigators recovered deleted message metadata.
Sender used prepaid device.
But one image attached showed old hospital bracelet:

Margaret’s maiden name:
Hart.
The missing baby from 1992 had been registered under Margaret’s sister Helen Hart.
