Chapter 9 - Ethan’s Name on the Backdoor

Northstar account architecture was messy.

Sales staff had demo identities.

Engineering had service identities.

Legacy master account EMERCER_ADMIN appeared created during Unit Fourteen rollout.

Ethan never requested it.

Creation IP traced to Victor Lane’s workstation.

Victor had built admin identity in Ethan’s name.

Why?

Plausible deniability.

If remote surveillance discovered, logs pointed to regional sales employee.

Ethan.

That explained Ryan’s anger.

He warned Ethan because his name was being weaponized.

Ethan escalated weakly, trusted manager and moved on.

Ryan kept investigating.

Then scandal broke.

Victor denied.

Company settled.

Records fragmented.

Years later Ryan apparently returned to reconstruct proof.

He contacted Claire because she retained NRS-4 service key.

He installed modern module in dead camera to recreate original backdoor behavior and capture whoever still possessed legacy credentials.

A honeypot.

He should have told homeowners.

He didn’t.

Still serious invasion.

But goal:

when legacy controller saw old Northstar device online, they might connect.

Someone did.

LEGACY_ADMIN.

Ryan’s trap worked.

Then why wasn’t Ryan monitoring safely?

Three weeks earlier Ryan was injured.

Not car accident.

Police found him at rehabilitation facility under privacy restriction after severe cycling collision.

Conscious but unable to speak easily due jaw surgery.

He communicated in writing.

Did you install camera?

YES.

Did Claire know purpose?

PARTLY.

Did you speak through it?

FIRST WEEK ONLY. NEVER TO CHILD.

Who used legacy admin?

DON’T KNOW. THAT WAS TRAP.

Why not tell Ethan?

BECAUSE IF ETHAN KNEW, LEGACY ADMIN WOULD KNOW.

Ethan bristled.

“You thought I was leaking?”

Ryan wrote:

I DIDN’T KNOW IF YOU WERE VICTIM OR ACCESS POINT.

Did Ryan say “Claire, don’t say another word” during foyer incident?

NO.

He was in rehab.

Records proved he could not speak normally that day.

Mystery voice belonged to legacy controller.

Whoever it was detected Ryan’s trap and took over.

Why tell Claire not speak?

Because Claire was about to reveal something controller wanted hidden.

What?

Claire replayed moment.

She had looked into camera because she intended say:

“I know what you did at Willow Lane.”

Emma stared.

“You knew?”

Claire received old Willow Lane file from Ryan two days before confrontation.

It contained evidence remote administrator activated camera while Carter family away.

One audio log had human voice.

Claire recognized it.

Not Ryan.

Not Victor.

Not Ethan.

She had been about to name person when controller silenced her.

“Who?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Martin Hale.”

Former general counsel.

But voice comparison excluded Martin as current speaker.

Maybe Martin had used system years earlier, while another person protected him now.

Martin was still alive in Arizona.

Maya questioned him again.

He denied.

Then presented Willow Lane audio.

Martin’s face changed.

“That isn’t me.”

Forensic analysis agreed voice sounded like him superficially but was not exact.

Claire had misidentified.

Ryan’s notes offered clue:

VOICE MASK TEST — MH PROFILE.

Someone years ago had tested voice filter modeled on Martin Hale.

Current controller could use same system.

Identity remained hidden behind another man’s voice.

Then technicians recovered one unfiltered fraction from current mansion transmission.

Less than one second.

A breath.

One word:

“Stop.”

Ethan listened.

Again.

Again.

His face slowly changed.

Emma noticed.

“You know it.”

This time Ethan did not deny.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Ethan looked toward Claire.

“It sounds like my father.”

Emma stared.

Ethan’s father, Jonathan Mercer, had been dead for twelve years.

But unlike Adrian story, nobody suggested resurrection.

Because Ryan’s archive contained hundreds of Jonathan’s recorded voice samples.

Someone had trained voice filter on dead man’s recordings.

May you like

Question became worse:

Why would anyone deliberately make Ethan hear his father?
