Chapter 7 - Claire’s Forgotten Return

Claire eventually remembered.

Not because memory magically returned.

Because Martin Hale found old text messages.

At 10:47 that night, Samuel Cole texted Claire:

LEFT YOUR PORTFOLIO AT UNIT 14. SIDE DOOR OPEN.

Claire drove back after dinner.

She entered near midnight.

Green folder was design portfolio.

She saw Samuel near control room.

He seemed nervous.

Another man stood inside.

Claire could not identify him because back turned.

Samuel told her leave immediately.

She did.

Why had she forgotten?

Years passed and event seemed unimportant until scandal.

No trauma amnesia.

No conspiracy memory wipe.

Just an ordinary late-night errand she had never connected.

Controller knew details because Unit Fourteen recorder captured them.

Current green-envelope instruction was deliberate reenactment.

Whoever controlled mansion camera possessed blue-box data before planting recorder.

Maybe Samuel.

Police located Samuel.

He had not vanished voluntarily.

He was in hospital in Maryland after car accident three weeks earlier.

Conscious now.

Maya traveled to interview.

Samuel denied controlling camera.

He was shocked recorder resurfaced.

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

“In Northstar evidence locker.”

“When company closed?”

“I moved it.”

“To private storage.”

“Who knew?”

“Victor Lane.”

Victor.

Former field systems director.

Current occupation:

home-security consultant.

Lives thirty minutes from Ethan.

Maya asked Samuel whose account he traced at Unit Fourteen.

Samuel hesitated.

“Victor’s.”

Was Victor secretly using maintenance backdoors?

Samuel believed yes.

But Victor claimed credentials cloned.

Before Samuel could complete investigation, leaked recording triggered scandal and company imploded.

Blue box vanished from storage two years later.

Samuel suspected Victor.

Why not report?

He had already given regulators copies of relevant data but session 14-117 was corrupted at time. Blue box itself became less central after settlements.

Current recovered files benefited Ethan.

But could incriminate Victor.

Police visited Victor’s address.

Empty.

Lease ended previous month.

Neighbor identified black SUV.

Same model seen near Ethan’s house.

Strong lead.

But too easy.

Maya obtained traffic records.

Victor’s SUV was across state on day voice spoke through camera.

Could be remote controller.

Still possible.

Then audio comparison between Victor’s voice and filtered camera speech.

After removing filter characteristics, forensic analyst found mismatch in cadence.

Not conclusive but unlikely.

Samuel’s voice?

Closer.

Martin?

Closer still.

But none exact.

Could be recorded phrases assembled? Yet Claire had real-time conversation.

Another person.

Someone from Northstar not on list.

Then Lily said something simple while playing.

“Camera man says Daddy Ethan.”

Emma crouched.

“What else does camera man say?”

Lily looked toward ceiling unit now disconnected and bagged as evidence.

“Green lady.”

Claire.

“What does he call Mommy?”

Lily thought.

“He doesn’t know Mommy.”

Emma froze.

Controller knew Ethan.

Knew Claire.

Knew Northstar.

Knew house.

But apparently referred to Emma only as “Mommy” after hearing Lily.

That suggested relationship centered on Ethan and Claire from before Emma entered their lives.

Then Lily added:

“Camera man was here.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“Inside house?”

Lily nodded.

“When?”

Toddler could not answer date.

“What did he look like?”

Lily pointed toward framed photograph on console.

Old Northstar charity gala Ethan had forgotten was there.

Five employees.

Lily touched one face.

A man standing behind Ethan.

Emma called Ethan.

“Who is this?”

Ethan looked.

His expression changed.

“Ryan Cole.”

Northstar’s youngest systems engineer.

And Ethan had attended Ryan’s funeral seven years ago.

But this time the dead-man explanation was wrong.

Because Ethan immediately corrected himself.

“No—Ryan didn’t die.”

“What?”

“His brother did.”

The family had confused names for years.

Ryan Cole was alive.

And nobody knew where he was.
