Chapter 5 - Unit Fourteen

Unit Fourteen was not a person.

It was a house.

A Northstar demonstration mansion outside Boston where prospective clients experienced integrated security technology.

Claire helped design interiors there.

Ethan handled sales demonstrations.

Six years before Emma met Ethan, Unit Fourteen hosted private presentation for wealthy developers.

That night system malfunctioned.

A confidential conversation between two visitors was recorded without consent.

Recording later appeared in business lawsuit.

Northstar claimed unknown employee extracted it.

Privacy scandal exploded.

Claire remembered something else.

Before leak, she saw Samuel Cole inside Unit Fourteen carrying blue diagnostic recorder.

She told nobody.

Why?

Samuel said he was investigating.

Then he warned her:

“If anyone asks, you never saw this.”

Years later stranger contacting Claire referenced exact sentence.

That convinced her he had inside knowledge.

Emma asked:

“Was voice Samuel?”

Claire shook head.

“I never heard Samuel speak through camera.”

Could be someone with recordings.

Forensic audio found male voice artificially filtered—not synthetic identity, just pitch/timbre masking.

Recognition unreliable.

Ethan’s apparent recognition in foyer came from three-tap sequence, not necessarily speaker.

That preserved mystery.

Then investigators recovered network route.

Camera traffic tunneled through compromised smart-home hub.

Origin bounced across servers.

But one connection occurred locally.

Three days earlier, camera controller connected from Wi-Fi network within 100 yards.

Someone had been near mansion.

Neighbor camera showed black SUV parked briefly.

Driver never exited.

Plate obscured.

Passenger visible only silhouette.

Claire stared.

“I’ve seen that SUV.”

“Where?”

Outside Lily’s daycare twice.

Emma’s anger surged.

Now unknown controller had watched child beyond house.

Police increased precautions.

Lily remained safe with parents.

Review of camera recordings showed controller spoke to Lily only three times.

Questions:

Where’s Daddy?

Does Daddy still keep blue box?

Does Daddy ever go into room under stairs?

There was no secret room under stairs.

Just storage closet.

Police searched.

Inside ordinary coats, vacuum, toolbox.

But ceiling panel above closet showed fresh screws.

Ethan had never noticed.

They opened it.

Hidden in cavity:

small blue metal case.

Emma turned toward Ethan.

“You said there wasn’t one.”

“I didn’t put that there.”

Case dusty externally but screws around cavity fresh.

Someone planted it recently.

Inside:

Northstar diagnostic recorder.

Serial:

NRS-BX-014.

Unit Fourteen.

The missing recorder.

Someone had placed scandal’s key evidence inside Ethan’s house.

Claire whispered:

“They’re framing him.”

Maybe.

Or returning something.

Maya connected recorder offline.

Most data encrypted.

One recoverable index listed audio sessions.

Final session:

14-117.

Timestamp night of original leak.

Participants tags:

M.H.

S.C.

V.L.

E.M.

Ethan Mercer.

Emma looked at him.

“Were you there?”

Ethan shook head.

“I left at seven.”

Session began 11:42 p.m.

Either tag E.M. did not mean Ethan—

or someone had evidence placing him at Unit Fourteen four hours after he claimed leaving.
