Chapter 6 - The Initials E.M.

Ethan’s old calendar supported him.

Dinner receipt at 8:10.

Parking garage exit 9:03.

Home internet activity 10:15.

But none proved he stayed home at 11:42.

Emma hated herself for wondering.

Ethan sensed it.

“I wasn’t there.”

“I want to believe you.”

“Then believe me.”

“I need facts.”

That hurt.

But after surveillance and secrets, facts mattered.

Recorder encryption required key derived from Northstar service credential.

Martin Hale helped investigators recover archived certificate.

Session 14-117 opened.

Audio began.

Martin Hale’s voice.

Victor Lane.

Samuel Cole.

Then fourth voice.

Not Ethan.

A woman.

Tag E.M. represented:

ELIZABETH MARSH.

Northstar outside counsel.

Ethan exhaled.

Emma apologized for suspicion.

But recording content shifted case.

Elizabeth confronted executives:

“You cannot keep diagnostic access active after customer acceptance.”

Victor argued remote access necessary for emergency support.

Samuel said he had found dozens homes where backdoor remained.

Martin demanded shutdown.

Then Elizabeth said:

“If this becomes public, Ethan’s signature will make it look like sales approved it.”

Martin responded:

“Then correct record before somebody makes him scapegoat.”

Ethan stared.

He had never heard this.

The blue box actually helped him.

It showed senior staff knew his signature could be misinterpreted and intended correction.

Why hide it in his house?

Maybe controller wanted Ethan find exonerating evidence.

Then recording continued.

Samuel:

“Unit Fourteen isn’t real problem.”

Martin:

“What is?”

Samuel:

“Somebody is using maintenance channel after hours.”

Victor:

“Who?”

Long pause.

Samuel:

“I traced command account.”

Recording corrupted.

Name missing.

Then female Elizabeth:

“If you’re right, call federal counsel.”

Samuel:

“I can’t. He knows I traced him.”

He.

A man.

Then three taps sounded in recording.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Same pattern camera speaker used now.

Ethan’s skin prickled.

Not generic test signal after all.

Someone in 2019? Timeline: scandal maybe ~8 years? Current Ethan38, Emma32. Let's keep “years earlier,” no exact.

The three taps were audible immediately before Unit Fourteen camera went offline.

Controller today was deliberately reproducing signal from that night.

Evan? no.

Maya said:

“He wants you connecting current surveillance to old case.”

Claire asked:

“Why not just send recorder?”

Because whoever controlled camera wanted behavior.

Wanted Claire scared.

Wanted Ethan searching.

Wanted family reacting.

Maybe testing who knew.

Then another recovered file appeared.

Video thumbnail.

Unit Fourteen foyer.

A man entered at 11:58 p.m.

Face partly hidden.

He walked beneath ceiling camera and looked directly upward.

On wrist:

Northstar field-access band.

He reached toward lens.

Before video cut, another person entered background.

Claire gasped.

“That’s me.”

Young Claire.

She had claimed she left Unit Fourteen at nine.

Why was she there near midnight?

Claire stared at frozen image.

“I don’t remember going back.”

Emma’s expression hardened.

Claire had lied before.

But this time her confusion looked real.

Then Ethan noticed what younger Claire carried.

A green folder.

Same green as envelope hidden stranger had instructed present-day Claire to leave under foyer console.

The controller was recreating events.

Step by step.
