Chapter 3 - The Northstar Key

It was not a door key.
Claire surrendered small brass key from safe-deposit box.
Stamped:
NRS-4.
Ethan recognized it.
Northstar technicians once used physical service keys to open secure residential control cabinets installed in luxury homes.
When company collapsed, customers were told systems had been decommissioned.
Ethan had kept one key accidentally after leaving.
Years later he gave it to Claire.
Why?
Claire had worked briefly as interior designer on Northstar model homes.
She knew old equipment.
Three years earlier Ethan found key while moving boxes.
He asked Claire to dispose of it with old electronics.
Instead she kept it.
“Why?”
Claire stared at camera.
“Because somebody contacted me.”
Six months earlier she received email containing photograph of Lily sleeping?
Need avoid invasive bedroom camera if only foyer. Better photo of Lily on staircase.
Photo showed Lily playing on staircase.
Taken from ceiling-camera angle.
At time camera supposedly dead.
Message:
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT ETHAN HELPED THEM HIDE, BRING THE NRS-4 KEY.
Claire believed someone inside old Northstar network had evidence Ethan participated privacy scandal.
She met man outside coffee shop.
He never gave real name.
He told her staircase camera contained old diagnostic memory inaccessible without key.
That was technically dubious.
But Claire believed.
She let him into mansion one night while Ethan and Emma traveled.
She handed him key.
He modified camera.
“Why would you allow a stranger to install surveillance in our home?” Emma demanded.
Claire answered:
“He said it would only recover old data.”
“For six months?”
“I didn’t know it stayed active.”
Maya challenged:
“Yet Lily says you talk to it.”
Claire’s eyes shifted.
That was different.
Three weeks after installation, voice began speaking through camera.
Same man?
Claire assumed so.
He warned her not to disconnect unit.
He claimed he possessed evidence Ethan had signed authorization allowing Northstar to retain customer audio.
If released, Ethan could face lawsuits.
Claire believed she was protecting family.
Then voice started giving instructions.
Small ones.
Leave envelope under console.
Move family photograph.
Ask Ethan whether he remembered “Unit 14.”
Eventually voice became controlling.
“Did he tell you to frighten Lily today?” Maya asked.
“No.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“Then why were you behind him on stairs?”
Claire looked down.
“I wanted him to point at camera.”
“What?”
“Lily had started talking to it.”
Apparently Lily sometimes stood beneath camera and answered unseen voice.
Claire wanted prove it.
She placed Lily on lower stair and told him to look up.
He became frightened.
When he tried descend, Claire moved heel behind foot to stop him.
She insisted she never intended push him.
That did not make behavior acceptable.
She had placed a toddler in danger to provoke reaction.
But central question changed again.
Who had been speaking to Lily?
Forensic team reviewed recordings.
Most clips contained no voice.
Then one from four nights earlier.
Lily stood at bottom stair holding toy truck.
Camera rotated.
Male voice:
“Where’s Daddy?”
Lily pointed toward kitchen.
“Does Daddy still keep the blue box?”
Lily nodded.
Emma stared at Ethan.
“What blue box?”
Ethan’s face tightened.
“There is no blue box.”
Camera recording continued.
Voice said:
“Good boy. Don’t tell Mommy.”
Emma slowly turned toward husband.
Lily had not invented secret.

Somebody was using camera to question their two-year-old child.
And whoever it was believed Ethan had hidden something blue inside house.
