Gabriel eventually negotiated limited proffer through counsel.
He had retained Sentinel master token.
Illegal? Potentially unauthorized depending use.
He claimed never used against occupied homes after Northstar shutdown.
But six months earlier someone contacted him.
Ryan Cole.
Ryan said he had Jonathan ledger and intended expose unresolved backdoor history.
Gabriel warned legacy architecture dangerous.
Ryan asked whether token still worked.
Gabriel refused answer.
Then Gabriel made mistake.
He logged into old sandbox to test.
That reactivated dormant credential.
Someone monitoring legacy network saw it.
Who?
A former Sentinel technician:
Caleb Warren, 52.
Caleb maintained infrastructure for Gabriel.
After Northstar collapse, he copied credential repository.
He later joined Aegis briefly, fired for unauthorized customer-data access.
Gabriel suspected Caleb had kept copies.
Why not report?
Because reporting would reveal Gabriel himself illegally retained master token.
Mutual silence.
Caleb became missing piece.
Current whereabouts:
local.
He ran freelance smart-home repair under different business name but same legal identity.
Customer records placed him near Ethan’s neighborhood.
Black SUV registered to company partner.
Voice comparison with unfiltered fraction:
strong match.
Police obtained warrant.
Caleb’s computer contained remote-control interface connected to Ethan foyer module.
Live session logs.
Recordings.
Commands.
He was controller.
But why?
Money?
Blackmail?
Revenge?
Caleb claimed he was proving Sentinel technology remained exploitable and planned sell evidence to security journalist.
That did not explain Lily.
He admitted asking toddler questions.
“I needed blue box.”
“You questioned a two-year-old through camera.”
“I never threatened him.”
Maya’s response cold:
“You secretly spoke to child inside his home.”
No minimizing.
Why did Caleb tell Claire:
“Don’t say another word”?
Because he heard Claire about to identify Martin? Earlier she planned say Willow Lane/possibly Martin. But Caleb wanted prevent her naming Gabriel perhaps. Need consistency.
Claire later clarified she had been about to say:
“I know Gabriel Shaw built this.”
Caleb feared Gabriel would learn investigation had reached him.
Caleb wanted manipulate Claire into retrieving Jonathan ledger before Ryan exposed it.
He believed ledger contained evidence Caleb had copied Sentinel credentials years earlier.
Why did camera turn toward Ethan and drain face?
Ethan recognized Jonathan-like voice pattern.
Caleb deliberately used filter trained on Jonathan recordings.
He knew Jonathan’s voice destabilized Ethan.
Cruel manipulation.
“You said nobody would ever hear you,” Claire had said because Caleb previously told her audio channel was “untraceable and private” when coercing her to follow instructions.
Claire knew controller only as “Sentinel.”
She had not known Caleb identity.
Why did she cooperate?
Because Caleb claimed he could release records framing Ethan as architect of Northstar surveillance.
Claire believed she was protecting Ethan.
Again, she made terrible decisions:
let stranger modify camera,
kept surveillance secret,
followed instructions,
used Lily to provoke camera.
But she did not invent controller.
Caleb did not order staircase heel incident.
Then police searched his files.
They found no evidence he intended physical harm.
His goal was blue ledger.
But blue ledger was with Ryan.
Why did Ryan not simply hand it police?
Because one sealed envelope inside was addressed to Ethan.
Ryan finally agreed to release.
Ethan opened it.
Jonathan’s handwriting:
ETHAN —
IF SENTINEL EVER RETURNS, DO NOT ASSUME THE PERSON USING IT IS THE PERSON WHO CREATED IT.
Exactly what happened.
Caleb used Gabriel’s architecture.
Gabriel retained token.
Victor hid access under Ethan’s name.
Martin concealed risk.
Ryan staged honeypot.
Claire cooperated.
Multiple layers.
Then second sentence:
THE MOST IMPORTANT RECORD IS NOT IN THIS BOX.
I GAVE IT TO DAVID.
Ethan looked toward Uncle David.
David went pale.
“What record?”
David whispered:
“The original Sentinel authorization.”
“Who signed it?”
David stared at Claire.
“Her father.”
Claire froze.
Her father, William Carter, had supposedly been an ordinary real-estate developer.
