Chapter 8 - The Person Who Entered at 2:14
Security cameras showed nothing.
But smart-lock logs revealed back door opened at 2:11 a.m.
No forced entry.
Valid code.
Code belonged to Claire.
She insisted she had not left bed.
Bedroom sleep monitor corroborated movement consistent with her remaining there.
Someone knew code.
Who?
Her mother Sarah had known old version.
But code changed after Sarah died.
Claire’s sister? None.
Housekeeper?
No.
David?
Yes.
But he was asleep beside Claire.
Then they found family tablet.
Lily had accidentally recorded short video earlier that evening.
Background showed Claire entering back-door code while carrying groceries.
Four digits visible.
Anyone with access to family cloud could view.
Who accessed cloud?
An old account:
EVELYNCARTER_ARCHIVE.
David’s mother’s name.
Created years after Evelyn died.
Someone had used her identity.
IP traced to public library.
Security footage showed hooded person.
Female.
Middle-aged.
Claire recognized walk.
“Mom.”
David stared.
Sarah Bennett had died three years earlier.
Or so Claire believed.
Not another easy fake death.
They checked.
Sarah had genuinely died.
Hospital records.
DNA.
Claire was present.
So woman could not be Sarah.
Who resembled her?
Sarah’s younger sister, Laura Bennett.
Claire’s aunt.
Alive.
Estranged.
Laura admitted accessing cloud.
Why?
Sarah had given her archive credentials before death.
Laura was supposed to watch Cedar Trust only if Claire activated it.
When Claire signed acknowledgment seven months earlier, Laura began monitoring.
She feared Claire had been drawn into Carter dispute.
Why sneak into house?
“To start groundwater monitor.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was waiting for signal.”
David stared.
Laura and Thomas had been communicating.
So Thomas’s appearance was not random.
Laura activated monitor.
Thomas entered tunnel.
But did they intend David to break floor?
“No,” Thomas said.
He intended retrieve environmental recorder and leave.
Lily heard monitor.
Then heard Thomas moving.
Everything collided.
Why carry Evelyn’s locket and expose himself?
Thomas said when David broke floor, he panicked.
Then decided secrecy had gone far enough.
He pushed hands up.
Showed locket.
Forced confrontation.
“Your wife knows why” referred to Claire’s trustee role and key.
He did not mean Claire imprisoned him.
He meant Claire possessed legal connection to Evelyn’s hidden project.
The terrifying opening scene finally began making rational sense.
But not full sense.
Who sent Claire threatening envelopes?
Laura denied.
Thomas denied.
Those warnings predated tunnel event.
Someone wanted Claire to avoid opening floor.
Why?
Because something else remained beneath it.
Environmental monitor contained memory card.
Data covered twenty years.
Mostly ordinary.
Then one date stood out:
November 6, 2007.
The day before Evelyn Carter died.
Audio channel had captured voices inside tunnel.
Evelyn.
Richard.
And a third person.
Evelyn said:
“If David ever learns what we did to Claire’s family, he’ll never forgive us.”
David stopped recording.
“What did they do to Claire’s family?”
