Michael Bennett had not worked for Carter company.
He investigated it.
As insurance adjuster, he handled liability claims involving Carter properties.
In 2006 he found repeated environmental complaints being settled individually rather than disclosed collectively.
He contacted Richard.
At first adversarially.
Then negotiated.
Michael believed immediate public litigation could bankrupt small contractor subsidiaries and leave affected families with little.
Richard proposed remediation fund.
Evelyn demanded independent trust.
That became expanded Cedar structure.
Michael helped design claimant process.
Sarah later became bookkeeper.
So Claire’s parents both knew Carter family professionally.
Yet Claire did not.
Why hide it from children?
Because Richard and Michael signed agreement prohibiting family members from serving as trustees simultaneously if David and Claire ever formed close personal relationship.
That sounded absurd until legal reason emerged:
conflict of interest.
If Carter heir married descendant of claimant-administrator family, trust governance could become compromised.
Evelyn’s letter “keep Claire away from David” wasn't romantic prophecy.
She knew both teenagers attended overlapping charity/school networks and wanted to prevent governance conflict while trust unresolved.
They never actually met then.
Years later they met independently.
By then parents were dead or silent.
Coincidence, not arranged marriage.
That closed one disturbing suspicion.
Then who sent envelopes to Claire?
Paper fibers matched old Carter Foundation stationery.
Printer pattern traced to storage office managed by Laura.
Laura denied writing.
Thomas denied.
Martin lived elsewhere.
Claire compared block letters to Sarah’s old notes.
Not Sarah.
Then David noticed numeral seven.
His father wrote sevens same way.
Richard?
Richard had died five years ago.
Impossible current sender.
Unless envelopes were prepared before death.
Postmarks recent.
Someone could be mailing prewritten warnings.
Laura admitted finding stack of sealed envelopes among Sarah’s papers.
She mailed them according to instructions when certain events occurred.
“Who wrote them?”
“I don't know.”
“You mailed threats to my wife without reading them?”
“Sarah told me they were safeguards.”
Another adult obeying dead person instead of thinking.
Claire opened remaining unsent envelopes.
Laura surrendered them.
First:
IF THOMAS RETURNS, GIVE DAVID THE LOCKET.
Second:
IF FLOOR IS OPENED, DO NOT LET THEM REMOVE THE NORTH BEAM.
Third:
IF DAVID FINDS HIS MEDICAL REPORT, TELL HIM RICHARD CHANGED ONE NAME.
North beam.
Police returned to cavity.
A structural beam ran beneath living room.
Inside hollow section they found metal tube.
Documents.
Original environmental report.
And claimant list.
One name had been altered by hand.
C.B.-14 originally read:
C.B.-14 — CLAIRE BENNETT.
Richard crossed out CLAIRE.
Replaced with:
SARAH BENNETT.
Why would Richard move Claire’s exposure claim to her mother?
Amount associated:
$840,000.
Claire had never received it.
Sarah had never received it.
Where did money go?
Account record:
CARTER-BENNETT PROTECTIVE RESERVE.
Current balance:
$3.7 million.
Joint authorization required.
Carter representative.
Bennett representative.
David looked at Claire.
