Chapter 10 - The Report With David’s Name
Why protect David?
He had been fifteen in 2007.
No corporate authority.
No involvement.
Then Thomas remembered Evelyn taking David to Cedar House as child.
David had forgotten.
Trauma and ordinary memory erosion had blurred it.
Family photographs confirmed visits.
Evelyn used house for charity meetings.
David played downstairs.
Environmental report contained pediatric blood screening.
One anonymous subject:
D.C.-15.
David Carter, age fifteen.
His test showed mildly elevated solvent metabolite.
Not dangerous at measured level.
But enough for Evelyn to panic.
She believed Carter properties may have exposed her own child.
That made issue personal.
Richard ordered immediate remediation.
Quietly.
Why hide report?
Because public disclosure could trigger lawsuits.
Evelyn wanted disclosure.
Richard wanted remediation first.
They fought.
Then Evelyn died in unrelated car accident.
Richard continued cleanup but suppressed historical report.
He told himself he was protecting David from being publicly identified as affected child.
Really, he was protecting company too.
David read father’s private memo:
IF D.C. BECOMES FACE OF THIS, HE WILL CARRY OUR FAILURE FOR LIFE.
David felt strange tenderness and anger simultaneously.
Richard loved him.
Richard also used love as justification for concealment.
But why did threatening note say Evelyn hid locket to protect David?
Because microfilm contained his medical result.
Someone feared privacy breach?
Not enough for anonymous threats.
Then independent auditor discovered another page.
D.C.-15 was not only pediatric sample.
There was:
C.B.-14.
Claire Bennett, age fourteen.
Claire stared.
She had been tested too.
Sarah had taken her to clinic after foreclosure because Claire had recurrent headaches.
No one told her test connected to Carter property.
Her result showed slightly elevated same metabolite.
David and Claire had both been exposed to environmental issue as teenagers.
Years before meeting.
Not enough to explain illness or create melodramatic medical catastrophe.
But ethically important.
Evelyn knew both names.
That explained recording.
She was protecting David and Sarah’s family.
Then Claire asked question nobody had considered.
“If Evelyn knew my full name when I was fourteen…”
“Yes?”
“Why did she later write my mother that I should never meet David?”
Silence.
Sarah’s archive contained letter:
KEEP CLAIRE AWAY FROM DAVID UNTIL CEDAR IS SETTLED.
David looked at wife.
Were their paths intentionally kept apart?
Why?
Environmental liability?
Legal conflict?
Or something else?
Thomas offered no answer.
Then Laura Bennett arrived carrying Sarah’s sealed journal.
She had withheld it because Sarah instructed release only after Cedar environmental report surfaced.
Inside:
EVELYN THINKS OUR CHILDREN MEETING WOULD COMPLICATE CLAIMS.
I THINK SHE’S AFRAID THEY’LL DISCOVER WHAT THEIR FATHERS DID TOGETHER.
Their fathers.
Richard Carter.
Michael Bennett.
Claire’s father.
