Decades earlier Cedar House had belonged to Carter Development’s predecessor.
Basement and lower tunnels were not designed as prison.
They were utility corridors connecting three neighboring estate buildings.
In late 1980s, Carter company converted nearby properties into temporary employee housing during major construction project.
Samuel Bennett worked as site engineer.
Not Claire’s father.
Another Bennett.
No known relation.
He discovered structural defects and unsafe soil contamination near worker residences.
Samuel reported it.
Management ignored him.
He threatened regulators.
Then he vanished.
Not murdered.
Company records claimed he resigned and moved west.
Evelyn later discovered resignation was coerced.
Samuel had been paid $210,000 to sign NDA and leave state.
But he returned secretly.
Why?
He believed contamination records had been hidden beneath Cedar House.
Evelyn helped him.
Sarah Bennett, Claire’s mother, was hired years later because same surname initially caught Evelyn’s attention—but no blood relation was ever established.
That mattered.
No convenient hidden genealogy.
Sarah became trusted bookkeeper through work, not secret lineage.
Then who received Samuel’s checks?
Samuel himself might still be alive.
Age approximately seventy.
Thomas believed person beneath floor could have been Samuel?
No.
Thomas was confirmed.
So Samuel was separate mystery within current history.
David worried story expanding too far.
Then Claire found note from Sarah:
S.B. REFUSED PAYMENT AGAIN. SAYS MONEY DOESN’T FIX WATER.
Water.
So Harbor payments were attempted compensation.
Checks returned.
But current bank account receiving them was not Samuel’s original.
Routing changed twelve years ago.
Someone redirected rejected payments.
Who?
Authorization signed:
Richard Carter.
Again.
David’s father.
Account beneficiary hidden behind trust.
Why would Richard redirect funds?
Auditors traced.
Money funded private environmental monitoring around former Carter properties.
Not personal theft.
Richard, after Evelyn died, secretly continued part of her work while publicly dismantling trust.
Contradictory man.
He protected company reputation and funded remediation simultaneously.
David began seeing parents as humans rather than symbols.
Evelyn hid restitution.
Richard hid remediation.
Both believed secrecy protected family.
Both created decades of confusion.
Then environmental files identified Cedar House itself.
Subfloor cavity contained monitoring well.
Location directly beneath living room corner.
Lily had been hearing something.
Not person initially.
A mechanical tapping from old groundwater monitor.
But on day David broke floor, Thomas was there because monitor’s sound told him hidden compartment had activated.
Why did monitor activate?
Someone turned it on remotely.
Who?
System registered credential:
C.BENNETT.
Claire Bennett—Claire’s maiden name.
Claire shook head.
“I didn't activate anything.”
Yet login came from her laptop.
Someone had used her credentials.
And access occurred at 2:14 a.m.
