Chapter 5 - The Second Key
Claire finally opened a locked drawer in bedroom.
Inside:
small brass key.
David had never seen it.
It arrived with trust documents seven months earlier.
Claire believed it opened old Cedar archive box.
Thomas claimed Evelyn’s silver locket contained another identical key.
David examined locket.
Back panel twisted open.
Inside was empty slot.
The key was gone.
Thomas said when Evelyn created trust, she made two access keys.
One for herself.
One for Sarah Bennett.
After Evelyn died, Richard recovered Evelyn’s locket.
Sarah kept second key.
Years later it passed to Claire.
So Thomas had locket but not key.
How did he get locket?
Richard gave it to him in 2008.
That contradicted everything.
Richard had publicly blamed Thomas for missing funds.
Why secretly meet him?
Because Richard eventually discovered Thomas hadn't stolen money.
He wanted help locating Evelyn’s reserve.
He gave Thomas locket.
Then Richard changed mind.
Told him never return.
Why?
Thomas did not know.
Shortly afterward, Thomas disappeared voluntarily, fearing corporate charges.
No kidnapping.
No underground prisoner.
The terrifying hands beneath floor belonged to a man hiding from old legal consequences while searching secret tunnel.
But why appear now?
Because Claire activated Cedar Trust by signing acknowledgment.
Automated notice reached Thomas.
He believed Evelyn’s missing ledger might finally surface.
Then David asked:
“Why tell me Claire knows why you have locket?”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Because I saw her key.”
“What?”
Thomas had been inside house once before.
Three weeks ago.
Through tunnel.
He reached old access panel behind living room baseboard.
Saw Claire kneeling near it with brass key.
She had found concealed lock.
Claire went pale.
“You were watching me?”
“I was waiting for you to open it.”
“Why didn't you speak?”
“Because I didn't know whether you were working for Richard’s old lawyers.”
David looked at Claire.
“What did key open?”
“A small box.”
“Where is it?”
Claire pointed beneath staircase cabinet.
Inside wall was old iron compartment.
She had opened it.
Found one document.
Then hidden it.
“Why?”
“Because your name was on it.”
David stared.
Claire retrieved folded page.
At top:
CEDAR BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION.
Primary beneficiary class:
FORMER CARTER PROPERTY RESIDENTS AND EMPLOYEES.
Not David.
Not Claire.
Then lower:
CONTINGENT FAMILY CUSTODIAN — DAVID CARTER.
David had been named to oversee restitution if Evelyn and Sarah were both gone.
His mother had placed responsibility on him when he was fifteen.
He never knew.
Then Thomas noticed something.
“This isn't original.”
“How can you tell?”
“Evelyn never used blue ink.”
Someone had replaced beneficiary designation.
