Chapter 12 - The $3.7 Million Reserve

The reserve was not secret inheritance.
It existed to fund medical monitoring, remediation and unresolved claims involving Carter and Bennett households.
David and Claire could not simply withdraw it.
Independent trust terms restricted use.
That suited both.
They wanted truth, not windfall.
Why did Richard replace Claire’s name with Sarah?
Martin explained.
Minors could complicate confidentiality settlements.
Richard moved claim under parent to shield Claire’s medical privacy.
Legally questionable.
But not theft.
Then Sarah refused payout.
She believed accepting individual settlement would weaken collective worker claims.
So money remained.
With growth:
$3.7 million.
That explained one secret beneath floor.
Not all.
North beam also contained Evelyn’s diary.
Final entry before death:
THOMAS THINKS RICHARD STOLE THE LEDGER.
RICHARD THINKS THOMAS STOLE THE MONEY.
BOTH MEN ARE WRONG.
SARAH HAS THE LEDGER.
Sarah Bennett.
Claire’s mother.
Where had she hidden it?
Laura knew.
Sarah placed ledger inside old family storage chest before death.
Claire retrieved it.
Ledger documented forty-two claimant families.
Payments.
Rejected offers.
Remediation costs.
No murder list.
No abducted workers.
No grand criminal cabal.
A record of corporate harm and imperfect attempts to repair it.
Thomas was cleared.
Richard’s suppression exposed.
Evelyn’s restitution preserved.
Sarah’s role recognized.
Current independent review estimated remaining validated claims and remediation obligations:
$11.8–16.2 million.
Carter Development could afford it.
David agreed company would fund independently verified obligations beyond existing reserves.
Board resisted.
He did not care.
Then ledger produced strange final section.
Five pages removed.
Sarah had cut them out.
Why?
Laura gave Claire another envelope.
Sarah’s handwriting this time.
CLAIRE,
THE MISSING PAGES ARE NOT ABOUT CEDAR.
DO NOT LET CARTER FAMILY USE THIS TRUST TO ANSWER A DIFFERENT QUESTION.
That was important.
Sarah intentionally separated another mystery.
She did not want Cedar restitution corrupted by unrelated family secret.
Where were pages?
Unknown.
But one fragment remained.
Names:
RICHARD CARTER.
MICHAEL BENNETT.
EVELYN CARTER.
Fourth line torn away.
Date:
2008.
One year after Evelyn died.
So Evelyn’s name referred to estate or earlier agreement.
Then David remembered Thomas said Richard gave him locket in 2008.
Same year.
“What happened in 2008?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Richard found something under house.”
“What?”
“I never saw it.”
“Why give you locket?”
“He told me if he disappeared, take it to Sarah.”
Richard did not disappear.
He lived another twelve years? But earlier said died five years ago; current 2026 means died 2021, yes.
So whatever happened in 2008 did not kill him.
Yet it frightened him.
Then forensic examination of silver locket found microscopic engraving beneath hinge:
NOT CEDAR.
M.B. KNOWS.
Michael Bennett knew.
Claire’s father.
He had died nine years earlier.
But he left storage unit.
Inside was one object.

DAVID MUST HEAR THIS ONLY AFTER THE FLOOR IS OPEN.
