Chapter 4 - Claire’s Signature
Claire was indeed successor trustee.
On paper.
She claimed she had not known until seven months earlier.
A law firm contacted her regarding dormant Cedar Beneficiary Trust.
Assets listed:
$412,000 cash reserve.
One easement.
Several sealed property claims.
Claire thought it was scam.
Then attorney showed Sarah’s signature.
Authentic.
Claire signed acknowledgment of receipt.
That signature made her acting custodian.
David’s anger sharpened.
“You became trustee over a tunnel under our home and said nothing?”
“I didn't know tunnel existed.”
“But you knew trust involved property.”
“Yes.”
“Our property.”
“I found that out later.”
“When?”
Claire hesitated.
“Six weeks ago.”
David stepped away.
Every answer contained another delayed truth.
Why keep silent?
Because trust lawyer told Claire reopening claims could expose Carter family to lawsuit.
Claire feared David would think she had targeted him for money.
“How much?”
Unknown.
Potential historical claims estimated between $6 million and $14 million.
Not personal money.
Most appeared connected to former tenants and employees.
Then police identified fingerprints from backpack.
Thomas Vale.
Alive.
So man beneath floor was almost certainly Thomas.
Why emerge now?
Thomas contacted David through attorney before police found him.
He agreed to surrender peacefully if Evelyn’s locket remained with David.
He was found at motel.
Exhausted.
Dehydrated.
Not kidnapped.
Not imprisoned.
He had entered tunnel voluntarily.
“Why hide under my floor?”
“To find something your father left there.”
“What?”
“Ledger.”
David nearly laughed.
“Everybody in my family hides ledgers.”
Thomas didn't.
“Not money ledger.”
“Then what?”
“A list of people Richard paid to disappear.”
David’s expression changed.
“My father murdered people?”
“No.”
“Then choose your words carefully.”
Thomas explained “disappear” meant relocation.
Severance.
Nondisclosure.
Debt settlement.
Some people had been pressured out of homes during Carter Development acquisitions.
Evelyn discovered it.
She created Cedar Trust to compensate them quietly.
Richard hated it.
Not because he opposed restitution entirely.
Because admitting coercive acquisition could expose company.
Evelyn and Richard fought.
Sarah helped Evelyn document cases.
Thomas handled accounts.
Then Evelyn died in a car accident.
David’s chest tightened.
“Was it accident?”
Thomas looked him directly in eye.
“Yes.”
That surprised him.
“No conspiracy?”
“Your mother died because another driver crossed center line. Police got that right.”
“Then why are you hiding?”
“Because what happened after her death wasn't an accident.”
Richard dismantled restitution program.
Records vanished.
Thomas was blamed for missing $1.9 million.
He fled after receiving threats of prosecution.
“Did you steal it?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Thomas answered:
“Nobody. Evelyn moved it before she died.”
“Where?”
“I thought under Cedar House.”
Then David held up locket.
“How did you get this?”
