Chapter 7 - Claire’s Mother Worked for the Mercers
Claire’s mother, Susan Dawson, had been Daniel and Eleanor’s housekeeper for nine years.
Claire grew up around Mercer townhouse.
She knew Ethan as teenager but they barely spoke.
That answered how she had old footage access.
Susan had witnessed violent arguments.
When Claire was eighteen, she began secretly recording after seeing Eleanor throw a vase near Susan.
Not to blackmail.
At first, to protect mother.
Susan feared losing job.
Claire stored clips.
Years later, after Claire started dating Ethan, she already knew his parents had volatile marriage.
Why didn’t she tell him?
She thought Ethan knew.
He didn’t.
Claire’s statement:
“I thought you were pretending not to know because that’s what everyone in that house did.”
That landed.
Then Daniel’s warning continued.
He discovered Claire’s archive in 2018.
He was angry.
Then understood why.
He copied some clips into own folder.
That was source of police evidence.
So Claire did not fabricate old abuse history.
She had documented it for years.
But Daniel feared something else.
Claire increasingly used recording as control.
During arguments, she would tell Eleanor:
“I have everything.”
Eleanor felt watched.
Daniel wrote:
Claire believes evidence makes her safe. Sometimes it makes her dangerous because she stops seeing people and starts seeing future proof.
That described today?
Claire called police before fight.
Reasonable.
But did she also intentionally keep cameras running and provoke topics she knew would trigger Eleanor?
Security video showed Claire placed phone on island facing room at 10:07.
Before Eleanor arrived.
She expected conflict.
That itself not wrongdoing.
Then audio before Eleanor entered:
Claire speaking to herself:
“Just say it. Make her say it.”
Claire had wanted confession.
What?
About foundation money.
She intentionally confronted Eleanor knowing police were coming.
She wanted recorded admission.
Was that entrapment? No, private confrontation.
Morally complicated.
But Eleanor still chose golf club.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why didn’t you just give evidence to board?”
Claire laughed.
“Because the last time I told you about your mother, you told me she loved too hard.”
Ethan remembered.
Years earlier Claire complained Eleanor shoved boundaries.
He minimized.
Not physical assault.
Still dismissal.
Claire stopped trusting him.
That was theme.
Then Adrian’s flash drive yielded older clip.
Before Claire and Ethan dated.
Eleanor arguing with Susan Dawson.
Eleanor:
“If you talk to Daniel, you lose your job.”
Susan:
“I’m asking you to stop touching me.”
Then Eleanor grabs Susan’s arm.
Claire’s teenage voice off camera:
“Let her go.”
Eleanor freezes.
This was older than any known report.
Eleanor stared at screen.
Her face collapsed.
That was the old clip police teased.
Not Daniel fight.
