Chapter 4 - Rebecca Lane Was Not a Mistress

Ethan had always heard whispers about Rebecca.
His father’s “special nurse.”
Late-night calls.
Private appointments.
Claire assumed affair.
Eleanor hated Rebecca.
That seemed obvious.
Wrong.
Rebecca Lane had been Daniel Mercer’s cardiac nurse and later private patient advocate.
In 2018, after domestic fight, Daniel secretly hired Rebecca to help Eleanor access trauma counseling and to monitor his own alcohol-related heart risk.
Why secretly?
Eleanor refused “being managed.”
Daniel used Rebecca as go-between.
That created resentment.
Then Rebecca discovered something.
Daniel’s heart medication had been filled under two different prescriber IDs.
One prescription legitimate.
One duplicate with altered dosage.
Could have caused dangerous interactions.
Rebecca confronted Daniel.
Daniel denied requesting second prescription.
She reported to pharmacy.
The duplicate stopped.
No poisoning.
No malicious dosing proven.
But someone had used Daniel’s insurance information.
Rebecca suspected family assistant.
Investigation never completed.
Then Daniel died in 2019 from confirmed myocardial infarction.
Natural causes according to autopsy.
No toxicology anomaly.
So Rebecca was not hidden murderer or mistress.
Why $80,000 now?
Eleanor admitted.
Rebecca had contacted her three months ago.
She was terminally ill? Health sensitive? Avoid maybe not. We can say retiring and found old archive. Better.
Rebecca was retiring and clearing personal records.
She found a flash drive Daniel gave her before death.
He told her:
“If anything happens to me, make sure Ethan eventually sees this.”
Rebecca had never opened.
She felt guilty.
She contacted Eleanor.
Eleanor begged to retrieve privately.
Rebecca demanded $80,000?
No.
Eleanor offered.
For what?
Rebecca had suffered career damage after being accused of boundary violations with Daniel.
Rumors pushed her out of hospital.
Eleanor believed family owed restitution.
The $80,000 was compensation.
She authorized from relief fund because Rebecca had actually worked for family.
Still improper without board.
But not hush money.
Claire saw transfer and assumed worse.
That argument triggered today.
Then Rebecca was contacted.
She was alive.
And surprised anyone knew flash drive existed.
“Eleanor never picked it up.”
“What?”
“She sent someone.”
“Who?”
“A man named Thomas Mercer.”
Ethan froze.
There was no Thomas Mercer in family.
Rebecca described:
mid-fifties,
gray hair,
family signet ring.
He claimed Ethan’s uncle.
No such uncle.
He gave Rebecca signed receipt from Eleanor.
Signature looked real.
Rebecca handed drive over.
Two weeks ago.
So someone impersonated family, took Daniel’s archive, and then mailed old abuse videos to Claire.
Why?
Maybe to destabilize them before revealing something else.
Then Claire received new message while police still in penthouse.
Unknown sender:
YOU FINALLY MADE THEM LOOK.
NOW ASK ELEANOR WHAT DANIEL RECORDED THE NIGHT BEFORE HE DIED.
Claire turned phone toward Ethan.
Eleanor sat down.
Her face collapsed.
She knew.
“Mom?”
Eleanor whispered:
“He recorded a confession.”
“Whose?”
May you like
She looked at Claire.
“Mine.”
