Daniel’s recording had been made eighteen hours before his heart attack.
Eleanor admitted she knew.
What confession?
Not murder.
Not affair.
Money.
Years earlier Eleanor had used Mercer Family Foundation funds to pay personal legal expenses.

$310,000.
She later repaid $190,000.
$120,000 remained unresolved.
Daniel discovered in 2018.
The same year family violence escalated.
Why legal expenses?
Eleanor’s younger brother Victor faced civil fraud lawsuit.
She believed accusation false.
She secretly paid his lawyers through foundation “family stabilization” grants.
Improper.
When Daniel found out, he threatened report to board.
Eleanor panicked.
That tension fueled their fights.
Claire’s 2018 video happened four days after discovery.
So old domestic violence and foundation misconduct were connected.
But Daniel did not report immediately.
Why?
He wanted Eleanor to repay and step down quietly.
Protection through secrecy again.
Daniel recorded Eleanor admitting.
He planned show Ethan.
Then died naturally next day.
Eleanor found out recording existed because Daniel told her:
“I’ve made sure Ethan gets everything if I don’t wake up tomorrow.”
But Rebecca never delivered.
Someone intercepted.
For seven years Eleanor lived knowing recording might surface.
That explained her panic around Rebecca.
Why attack Claire today?
She came angry about Claire auditing $80,000.
Claire accused:
“You’ve been using foundation money for years.”
True enough to pierce.
Eleanor saw Claire reaching for folder.
She believed Daniel’s confession was inside.
She swung.
Not rational.
Not justified.
But motive.
Then independent audit showed old misuse.
Eleanor could not deny.
She had already partially repaid.
Board never knew.
Current $80,000 Rebecca payment, while potentially compassionate, repeated same unilateral authority pattern.
Claire was right about governance problem.
But who had Daniel’s flash drive now?
Anonymous sender.
They possessed:
old videos,
Daniel confession,

knowledge of Rebecca,
ability to plant check in Eleanor’s purse.
Someone close.
Police traced mailed package to courier drop.
No useful camera.
But paper stock came from Mercer Tower executive offices.
Access limited.
Ethan’s company.

Claire? Claire maybe no longer employee? Let's say consultant.
CFO Michael Ross,

family office director Helen Price.
Then Claire noticed something.
Anonymous sender always addressed her as “Claire Mercer.”
She had used Ethan’s surname only during marriage.
After divorce she returned Claire Dawson.
Very few current people still used Mercer.
One person habitually did.
Daniel.
But dead.
Or someone using Daniel’s archived contact templates.
Ethan searched old family server.
A dormant scheduled-message folder existed under Daniel’s account.
Not sent.
Drafts.
One addressed CLAIRE MERCER.
Subject:
WHEN THEY SAY IT NEVER HAPPENED.
Inside:
links to archived smart-home videos.
Daniel had prepared package before death.
But he had not sent it.
Someone accessed folder two months ago.
User credentials:
ELEANOR.MERCER.
Eleanor stared.
“I haven’t logged into that server in years.”
Forensic records showed login from penthouse Wi-Fi.
Claire’s penthouse.
Claire went pale.
“Someone used my network.”
