Chapter 3 - Claire Had Already Called
The police were not responding to a random 911 call from neighbors.
Claire had called before Eleanor ever lifted the golf club.
At 10:14 a.m.
The fight began 10:31.
Claire told dispatcher:
“My mother-in-law is coming over. She has threatened me before. My husband usually sides with her. I’m afraid something will happen.”
She requested welfare check.
Dispatch was delayed.
Officers arrived after confrontation.
That explained Claire’s line:
“You finally came.”
She expected them.
But did that mean she had staged fight?
Ethan immediately wondered.
The officers did too.
Security footage answered partly.
Eleanor entered penthouse carrying golf club.
Why?
She said it belonged to Ethan and she brought it back from country club.
Plausible.
Then argument.
Claire accused Eleanor of transferring $80,000 from family foundation account without board approval.
Eleanor denied.
Claire said she had records.
Eleanor called her a liar.
Claire reached for folder on island.
Eleanor grabbed club.
First swing happened.
Not staged.
Police video, penthouse security and phone footage aligned.
Claire had not provoked physical attack beyond argument.
Then she took club away and struck Eleanor twice.
Self-defense initially plausible.
But after disarming Eleanor, second swing might be scrutinized.
Then Ethan entered.
He saw mother on floor.
Without asking, took club from Claire and kicked her.
Then hair-pulling.
Demanded apology.
Claire punched him.
Again, all captured.
The officers arrested Ethan based on:
visible aggression,
prior call expressing fear,
older clips suggesting pattern,
and current footage.
Eleanor was not immediately arrested because paramedics took her for shoulder evaluation; investigation continued.
Claire was not arrested then because officers initially viewed her actions as defensive.
Not final judgment.
Then Ethan asked Claire:
“What was the $80,000?”
She looked at Eleanor.
“That’s why she came.”
Eleanor snapped:
“It was not theft.”
“What was it?”
A foundation account called Mercer Family Relief Fund.
Designed for emergency support to former employees.
Eleanor authorized $80,000 to a recipient without board vote.
Recipient:
A woman named Rebecca Lane.
Claire had discovered.
Who was Rebecca?
Eleanor refused.
“Not your business.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that until somebody gets hurt.”
Ethan had heard name before.
Rebecca Lane.
A nurse who had worked for his father in 2018.
The same year as first domestic violence report.
Then police found envelope inside Eleanor’s purse.
Addressed:
CLAIRE MERCER.
Inside:
a check for $80,000.
Not to Rebecca.
To Claire.
Eleanor looked stunned.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Claire stared.
Neither did she.
Someone had switched or planted an envelope before Eleanor arrived.
This changed fight.
Claire believed Eleanor stole foundation money for Rebecca.
Eleanor thought she carried ordinary documents.
But purse contained money addressed to Claire.

And whoever sent old videos two months earlier might be the same person.
