Chapter 8 - The Guardianship Letter
Michael Grant had prepared guardianship letter six months before his fatal car accident.
No evidence death suspicious.
A drunk driver struck his vehicle.
The guardianship letter named preferred temporary guardian if both Michael and Emma became unable to care for Lily.
First choice:
Richard Bennett.
Second:
Catherine Bennett.
Not Ethan.
Not Vanessa.
Richard was touched and disturbed.
But why secret?
Because Michael distrusted Ethan’s impulsiveness and Vanessa’s influence over him.
He wrote:
I love Ethan, but if Lily ever needs stability after Emma, do not place her where Vanessa controls access.
Vanessa read line and went white.
“What did I ever do to Michael?”
Emma’s late husband had apparently disliked her.
Then missing second page was found in Charles's legal archive.
It said:
This is not accusation of harm. Vanessa has repeatedly tried to insert herself into Emma’s decisions and has discussed boarding-school placement for Lily as if Emma were incapable. I do not want ambiguity.
So Michael's concern was control, not evidence Vanessa dangerous.
Still, guardianship letter could motivate Vanessa if Emma vanished permanently: Vanessa might lose influence.
But no inheritance.
Lily’s trust independent professional trustee.
No one gained fortune by controlling her.
That prevented simplistic motive.
Then Emma’s investigation notes revealed she suspected someone was trying to modify guardianship letter after Michael died.
Digital scanned copy had altered first choice:
ETHAN BENNETT.
Paper original said Richard.
Who made alteration?
Metadata:
Family office assistant under Ethan’s credentials.
Ethan denied.
Vanessa denied.
Charles denied.
Then former family-office employee named Susan Reed remembered scanning documents.
“Vanessa asked for copy.”
Vanessa admitted.
She wanted understand why Michael disliked her.
“Did you change it?”
“No.”
Forensics found scan edit originated from PDF software on Vanessa’s laptop.
Her face collapsed.
“I didn't.”
Could another use laptop? Ethan knew password. Staff IT.
Then Catherine interrupted.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
Catherine had borrowed Vanessa’s laptop during family meeting eighteen months earlier.
She edited PDF as experiment after suspecting somebody was manipulating family records? That sounds weak.
Better Catherine edited because Richard had temporary medical event and she thought Ethan should be backup? But forging guardianship is serious. Could do draft, not official.
She claimed it was never intended official.
After Michael died, Emma became severely depressed for several months. Catherine worried Richard’s heart condition made him poor emergency guardian. She prepared hypothetical revised draft naming Ethan and showed Emma.
Emma rejected.
Catherine deleted.
But PDF remained in laptop cache and was later mistakenly uploaded to family archive by automated backup.
Thus altered scan looked more sinister than it was.
No legal effect.
Original remained controlling preference.
Again misleading document.
Then why estate box opened at night?
Catherine admitted once.
Charles twice.
Vanessa once.
Each for different reasons.
Household access logs used Richard master credential because archive door was configured stupidly to log all override entries under master account.
So “Richard-B” did not identify person.
The access mystery weakened.
But Emma had discovered repeated physical movements.
Someone still drugged her.
Someone locked Day 8 room.
Someone moved her after Catherine left.
Then police found hair in dumbwaiter shaft.
Emma’s.
And another person’s.
Male.
DNA matched no Bennett family.
Database search:
Samuel Ward.
Forty-seven.
Private security contractor.
Richard recognized name.
He had hired Samuel three months earlier to audit mansion security after anonymous threat letters.
No one else knew.
“Why didn't you tell family?” Ethan demanded.
“To avoid alerting whoever was sending them.”
Samuel was contacted.
He did not answer.
His office empty.
Richard finally showed threat letters.
All contained same sentence:
THE WOMAN IN THIS HOUSE IS NOT SAFE WHILE THE GRANT FILE REMAINS HERE.
