Chapter 14 - The One Time Emma Couldn’t Leave
Emma’s final testimony simplified much of what family had complicated.
She returned to mansion voluntarily to investigate suspicious trust and guardianship records.
Most theories were wrong or only partly right.
The $418,000 Eastbridge transfers were almost entirely legitimate protected-housing expenses.
The $56,000 Site C payment was also legitimate but intentionally shielded because of safety concerns.
The altered Lily guardianship PDF was Catherine’s unauthorized hypothetical draft accidentally uploaded, not operative legal document.
The “fake” Elizabeth Reed was a lawful protective alias.
The second Michael Grant vendor record belonged to Robert Grant operating under ambiguous business name, with real work performed but improper disclosure.
No stolen fortune.
No plot to seize Lily.
No evidence anyone wanted Emma dead.
Emma voluntarily used hidden corridors with help from Ethan, Catherine, Vanessa, Charles, Hayes and Samuel at different moments.
Each knew a different piece.
Each concealed involvement.
That made it look as if one mastermind was “moving” her.
Lily saw adults escorting Emma between rooms and described what she understood:
“They keep moving Mommy.”
Emma sometimes took doxylamine herself due insomnia.
No evidence anyone secretly drugged her.
She had been drowsy from sleep deprivation and medication she voluntarily used.
The silver-watch man was Ethan in one recorded confrontation.
Charles also wore similar watch, deepening confusion.
Wedding ring genuinely came from Emma through serving hatch.
She gave it to Lily intentionally.
Bread was cover.
“Mommy hasn't eaten today” was partly true—Emma had skipped food—but Emma also encouraged Lily to carry bread so adults would notice her distress and Richard would ask.
That was reckless.
Emma admitted.
“I used my daughter to send message.”
Richard said:
“You scared her.”
“I know.”
No noble exemption.
Then:
“When were you held?”
Day 10.
After Catherine left Emma near basement records room, an unknown man entered through exterior service hatch.
Not family.
He locked outer panel and demanded flash drive.
Emma had copied household access logs.
The man believed those logs contained protected Site C identities.
He worked private security for abusive spouse connected to one Site C resident.
This was real danger.
Identity:
Victor Sloan, private investigator.
He had been illegally searching for relocated woman on behalf of ex-husband despite protective order.
He infiltrated mansion service corridor because he believed Bennett Foundation hid address.
He saw Emma accessing files and assumed she had it.
He locked her in room for approximately three hours and searched belongings.
Did he move her among rooms for days?
No.
Only one confinement.
Emma escaped through dumbwaiter shaft after he left.
She did not report immediately because doing so might expose Site C resident if Victor learned police activity? That was bad reasoning. She also feared she had herself improperly accessed protected files.
She contacted Samuel and Hayes indirectly.
Then continued investigating.
Victor was arrested after Emma finally identified him. Security records and external camera supported.
Was he at formal dinner?
No.
Was he knocking behind wall?
No.
Was he person Lily pointed toward?
No.
So why did Lily point at family member?
Because Emma told her:
“If Grandpa asks who keeps moving me, point to the purple lady.”
Emma meant Vanessa, who had moved her between corridor rooms twice at Emma’s request but later tried stop her investigation.
Lily interpreted literally.
Emma had not meant Vanessa abducted her.
That was an adult instruction too ambiguous for four-year-old.
Vanessa had not imprisoned Emma.
But Vanessa concealed Emma’s location and key C-3 out of self-protection.
Her wrongdoing remained.
Officer Hayes had not come to remove Lily as part conspiracy.
He was responding to welfare concern and intended move child away from chaotic table.
Anonymous call?
Victor Sloan had made it.
Why?
He knew Lily could reveal Emma behind wall and wanted police remove child before she spoke.
Phone records from his seized device confirmed VoIP account.
That connected timing.
Victor had returned outside mansion during dinner but never entered.
He watched remotely through exterior camera.
When he saw Lily enter dining room, he called welfare report.
He hoped authorities would take her before Richard questioned her.
This was the one genuine hostile actor exploiting event.
But Victor did not know Emma had already left corridor for service exit.
He thought she was still hidden.
The three knocks?
Commercial dishwasher water hammer.
Not Emma.
That was why no response followed Richard calling her.
The wall had contained Emma earlier, so interpretation seemed obvious.
But knocking itself was plumbing.
Then Richard asked:
“Why did you leave rental house and go to Cedar House?”
“To meet Robert Grant.”
“And childhood house?”
“To finish Michael’s letters without everyone following me.”
“You could have called.”
“Yes.”
“You let us believe you were still trapped.”
“I didn't know dinner incident happened until police found me.”
Her phone had remained off.
Emma cried.

“I thought I was investigating people who were lying to me. I became another person lying to everyone.”
That was truth.
