Chapter 5 - Ethan’s Watch
Ethan Bennett admitted entering corridor.
He had lied.
Vanessa looked devastated.
“When?”
“Six days ago.”
“Did you see Emma?”
“Yes.”
Richard stood.
“You knew your sister was alive?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Emma told me Dad was being watched.”
Richard stared.
“By whom?”
“She didn't know.”
Emma had contacted Ethan through burner phone.
She told him to enter corridor alone.
He found her.
She showed him trust records and flash drive containing internal access logs.
Emma believed someone had used Richard’s electronic approvals to authorize Eastbridge payments.
She suspected Charles.
Ethan disagreed.
Then Emma said something stranger.
Someone had been entering corridor nightly and moving her supplies.
“I thought it was her paranoia.”
“You left her there?”
“She wasn't locked in.”
“Did you move her?”
“No.”
“Did you have silver watch?”
“Yes.”
So Lily’s “man with silver watch” could be Ethan.
But Ethan claimed he did not move Emma.
Footage verified argument.
He was man.
The line:
“You were supposed to give me the drive.”
Ethan explained Emma had promised him copy so he could submit to outside counsel.
“Why say Lily wasn't part of this?”
Emma threatened to take Lily away from mansion immediately.
Ethan said Lily was safe and shouldn't be pulled into adult financial conflict.
No sinister meaning.
Then what happened after camera cut?
Emma removed memory card? No, card survived. Camera battery died. Ethan stayed thirteen minutes and left.
Door logs supported.
He did not imprison her.
Then Richard asked:
“Why did Lily say someone kept moving her?”
Ethan looked confused.
“I don't know.”
Ethan had another secret.
He had discovered trust transfers were not theft.
Eastbridge Residential Services was paying for renovations at three properties used by Bennett Family Foundation’s domestic-violence housing program.
Confidential addresses.
Richard had approved umbrella budget but not individual locations to protect residents.
Charles had structured.
Vanessa’s name appeared because she served foundation design committee and recommended accessibility contractor.
So $418,000 mostly legitimate.
Emma’s suspicion of fraud might be wrong.
But then why secrecy?
Because addresses and beneficiaries protected.
Charles couldn't openly show Emma without authorization.
Still, he could have explained existence.
Instead he stonewalled.
That escalated.
Then Detective Monroe examined transfers.
$362,000 reconciled.
$56,000 did not.
Eastbridge invoice:
TEMPORARY RESIDENT RELOCATION — SITE C.
No supporting documents.
Charles claimed confidentiality.
Independent trustee confirmed no Site C authorization.
So there was an irregular payment.
Who approved?
Ethan’s digital token.
Ethan denied.
Token access occurred while he was on flight.
Could be stolen credentials.
Emma had found genuine anomaly.
Then flash drive she showed Ethan contained login logs.
He copied it.
At home, file vanished from laptop next morning.
Who had access?
Vanessa.
Ethan did not accuse yet.
Then Vanessa admitted she had seen drive.
“I didn't delete anything.”
“Did you copy it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Emma's files included my name.”
Again self-protection.
She copied.
Then returned drive to Ethan's desk.
Next morning gone.
Who else?
Household IT manager.
Charles.
Richard’s executive assistant.
And Emma herself through remote access?
Potentially.
Then Lily’s ring became more important.
Inside ring band, Detective Monroe found tiny black residue.
Graphite dust.
Same dust coating old dumbwaiter rails.
Emma had been moved through dumbwaiter shaft.
Not carried.
Someone used a hidden platform lift connecting service corridor levels.
Where did it lead?
Basement wine cellar.
Attic storage.
And a sealed room behind library.
Police opened sealed library room.
There was fresh mattress.
Food.
Medical supplies.
And Emma’s handwriting on wall:
DAY 8.
ETHAN IS NOT THE ONE MOVING ME.
