Chapter 6 - Officer Hayes
Hayes had received Emma’s call.
He had also visited mansion once.
Not officially.
Day 5.
He entered through basement service access after Emma texted:
I THINK SOMEONE LOCKED OUTER PANEL. PLEASE COME ALONE.
Hayes came off duty.
That was a serious procedural mistake.
He should have called supervisor.
Why didn't he?
Emma had asked for discretion because Lily was sleeping upstairs and she feared family scandal.
Again secrecy.
Hayes found Emma behind pantry wall.
Outer panel had indeed jammed.
He opened it.
He urged her leave.
She refused.
“She said if she left, whoever was using corridor would know she had discovered route.”
“What route?”
Old lift.
Someone had been transporting boxes through mansion after midnight.
Emma wanted photograph who.
Hayes told her investigation had gone too far.
She promised leave next morning.
He left.
Why no report?
He believed adult voluntarily inside own family property.
Poor judgment.
Then next day Emma disappeared from that corridor.
Hayes returned after she failed answer.
Panel open.
No Emma.
He began to worry.
But before he could report, he received text from Emma:
SAFE. STOP LOOKING.
Forensics now showed that text was sent after Emma's phone had been accessed using code.
Could still be Emma.
Could be someone else.
Hayes failed to escalate.
He admitted.
That explained why Lily considered him “good”: Emma had said Officer Daniel could help.
Why did Hayes arrive at dinner specifically to take Lily?
Anonymous welfare call.
No evidence Hayes orchestrated.
But caller knew Emma trusted him, perhaps choosing him? Dispatch assigned nearest unit, not targeted individual. Coincidence.
Then police searched library hidden room.
Fingerprint:
Emma.
Hayes.
Unknown.
Unknown matched Charles Hale.
Richard confronted attorney.
Charles admitted entering.
Day 7.
“I found Emma there.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell anyone?”
“She threatened to accuse me publicly if I did.”
“So you left her hidden?”
“She wasn't imprisoned.”
“Was door locked?”
“No.”
Charles claimed Emma confronted him with $56,000 Site C transfer.
He explained.
Site C was emergency payment to relocate woman and child from a violent spouse.
Who?
Confidential.
Independent legal privilege complicated.
Detective obtained sealed judicial review.
Payment legitimate.
Beneficiary identity protected.
But invoice was intentionally excluded from foundation ledger because abuser had connections to one board member.
Which board member?
Charles refused publicly.
Judge allowed investigators access.
Richard learned only later.
The board member was Ethan.
Not because Ethan was abuser.
The violent spouse worked for Ethan’s company and had access to internal administrative systems. Foundation feared disclosure through company.
So Site C was hidden from Ethan's standard reports.
Messy but legitimate.
That meant Emma’s central financial theory collapsing.
Then why Charles inside hidden room?
He had followed Emma after noticing she accessed old corridor.
He wanted stop unauthorized viewing of protected Site C files.
They argued.
Emma accused him of covering crimes.
Charles explained enough to convince her partially.
Then she asked:
“Who keeps moving me?”
Charles said he didn't know.
He suggested leave.
Emma refused.
Next day she was moved again.
Charles did not report.
Why?
He thought she was staging pressure tactic.
Richard was disgusted.
Everyone kept leaving Emma alone because they believed she was choosing secrecy.
Then Lily gave key detail:
“Mommy sleeps after juice.”
Detective asked gently.
“What juice?”
“Purple lady brings cup.”
Vanessa again.
Vanessa denied.
But kitchen inventory showed children’s grape juice carried upstairs daily.
Housekeeper said Vanessa often brought Lily juice.
Could Lily mean herself?
“Did purple lady give Mommy juice?”
Lily nodded.
“She goes sleepy.”
Possible drugging.
Police tested bottle from hidden room.
Residue:
doxylamine, an over-the-counter sedating antihistamine.
Someone had been sedating Emma.
