Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Missing Seven Minutes
Vanessa denied returning corridor at 6:28.
Dining-room photographs created problem.
At 6:22 she was seated.
At 6:31 seated again.
Between:
Absent.
Seven minutes.
She claimed bathroom.
No witness.
Her white evening gown matched frame.
She finally admitted entering corridor.
Why?
She had received text from Emma:
COME NOW. I KNOW WHO ALTERED MICHAEL’S FILE.
Vanessa went.
Emma accused her.
Vanessa became furious.
But she did not abduct Emma.
She claimed Emma showed wedding ring and said:
“Lily has this. Richard will know I'm alive.”
Then Emma heard Hayes returning.
She panicked and moved deeper corridor herself.
Vanessa followed.
“Where?”
Toward old pantry lift.
Then someone opened lower door.
Emma stepped onto lift.
Vanessa couldn't see who was below.
The lift descended.
“Why didn't you tell police?”
“Because Lily pointed at me.”
Vanessa feared every secret made accusation worse.
So she lied.
Who was below?
Could be Catherine? no, she was searching other route.
Charles? at table.
Ethan? at table.
Richard? table.
Samuel? hospital.
Hayes? front.
Unknown.
Then mansion service lift inspection revealed it didn't require person below.
Emma could lower herself manually.
Could she have?
Vanessa heard motor.
Original mechanism electric, button inside platform.
Yes.
So Emma may have moved herself.
Where lift ended?
Basement laundry corridor.
Exterior service door.
Emma could have left mansion.
Then why knocking from wall during dinner minutes later?
Because another person in wall.
Everyone assumed Emma.
What if knocks weren't Emma?
Lily ring proved Emma was there earlier, not at moment of knocks.
Police returned to dining wall.
Knocking pattern reproduced.
Three knocks could transmit from basement pipes due old steam valve.
Could have been accidental plumbing.
But during dinner timing suspicious.
Then building engineer tested.
Kitchen dishwasher cycling caused exactly three water-hammer knocks against service chase.
At approximately dinner scene, kitchen logs showed commercial dishwasher started.
So three knocks may not have been woman at all.
Richard had interpreted because Lily mentioned mother.
No conscious signal proven.
This dramatically changed ending.
The wall contained evidence Emma had been there, but knocks did not prove she remained inside.
Then where was Emma?
Security camera outside service door showed woman leaving at 6:34 p.m.
Beige coat.
Hat.
Face partly hidden.
Likely Emma.
She entered dark sedan.
Driver:
unknown.
License plate obscured.
Was she abducted? Video showed she opened passenger door herself.
Could be voluntary.
Then Lily was removed? Hayes led her away only within dining room before stopping; she was never taken from property after accusation, and later Child Services allowed Richard temporary supervision after safety review. Good.
Then Emma’s ring.
Why give it to Lily if she planned leave?
A signal.
She wanted Richard know she was alive and had been in hidden corridor.
Why not simply appear?
Because she believed driver could lead her to person manipulating Grant estate records.
She had planned another surveillance step.
Again reckless amateur investigation.
Then police recovered text from burner:
CAR AT SERVICE EXIT 6:30.
BRING ORIGINAL RING SO I KNOW IT'S YOU.
Emma gave ring to Lily instead.
Meaning she did not trust driver.
Yet still got into car.
Why?
Maybe to follow lead.
Who sent text?
Prepaid account.
Payment card traced to family member.
Richard.
Richard stared.
“I didn't buy it.”
Card was from his family-office expense account, used by executive assistant.
Assistant:
Grace Miller.
Grace had served Richard fifteen years.
Why would she contact Emma?
