Chapter 12 - Grace Miller

Grace Miller was not glamorous enough to be noticed at formal dinner.
She wasn't seated.
She had spent evening coordinating staff.
Richard trusted her completely.
Grace admitted sending some anonymous messages.
Not all.
She learned Emma hiding in mansion after seeing service access logs.
She believed family arguments were becoming dangerous.
She wanted get Emma somewhere neutral.
She arranged sedan through private driver.
Why anonymous?
Emma refused answer Grace directly.
So Grace used prepaid number pretending to be source with evidence.
The “bring original ring” instruction was proof Emma herself entered car, not someone impersonating her.
Emma gave ring to Lily instead, but still came.
Grace was waiting in car?
No.
Professional driver.
Destination:
a small rental house Grace had secured.
Police went there.
Empty.
But recently occupied.
Emma’s suitcase.
Food.
Laptop.
No signs struggle.
Emma had stayed there after leaving mansion.
For how long?
Approximately four hours.
Then she left again.
Where?
Laptop contained final research.
She had finally solved Grant guardianship alteration.
No one maliciously forged current legal document.
Catherine’s hypothetical edited draft had been accidentally uploaded to archive.
That was it.
Emma realized this at rental.
She wrote:
THE GUARDIANSHIP FILE IS NOT WHY SOMEONE WANTS ME QUIET.
What did she mean?
She found second issue.
Michael Grant had left a sealed safety-deposit instruction.
Not about Lily custody.
About Bennett Foundation property.
Michael had discovered one of confidential housing sites had faulty fire-safety certifications.
He reported to Charles.
Charles ordered repairs.
Invoices showed repairs completed.
No cover-up now.
Then why danger?
Michael’s original memo named contractor:
MILLER SAFETY SERVICES.
Grace’s brother's company.
Grace went pale when shown.
“That's why I wanted Emma out.”
Not to silence.
She feared Emma would accuse her family before seeing repairs had been corrected.
Her brother had installed faulty systems years earlier.
Insurance claim settled.
No deaths or injuries.
Grace had recommended vendor without disclosing relation.
Conflict of interest.
Embarrassing and possibly policy violation.
But not kidnapping motive.
Then Emma's laptop revealed email to Grace:
I KNOW ABOUT YOUR BROTHER. THAT’S NOT WHY I’M LEAVING. SOMEONE USED SITE C TO CREATE A PERSON WHO DOESN’T EXIST.
A person?
Site C legitimate relocation payment.
But beneficiary records under sealed court review showed recipient alias:
ELIZABETH REED.
Protective alias.
Real person existed.
Not fictional.
Emma had found tax record indicating Elizabeth Reed paid as household contractor at Bennett mansion after relocation.
That could expose protected identity.
Who was Elizabeth?
Court allowed investigators know.
Not family.
Domestic-violence survivor.
She had briefly worked mansion under another approved name.
No conspiracy.
Emma was again reading protective alias as fake person.
Then her next note:
I WAS WRONG ABOUT ELIZABETH.
So she corrected herself.
Then last line:
THE PERSON WHO DOESN’T EXIST IS “MICHAEL GRANT.”
Richard stared.
Emma’s late husband?
Impossible.
Michael Grant definitely existed.
Marriage.
Employment.
Death.
DNA as Lily’s father? Could test stored? There was no reason doubt.
What did Emma mean?
Maybe a second record under same name.
Indeed laptop showed two Michael Grants.
Her husband:
Michael Andrew Grant, born 1984.
Second:
Michael Thomas Grant, born 1976.
A different man.
Both appeared in Bennett Foundation vendor records.
Emma initially conflated.
The second Michael Grant had been paid $96,000 over three years by Eastbridge.
Who was he?
No social security match.
Possibly vendor alias.
This was separate financial irregularity.
Could this be why Emma left rental?
She sent message:
I’M GOING TO MEET HIM.
Grace begged her not to.
Emma left.
Driver wasn't Grace’s.
A rideshare took her to old Bennett Foundation property called Cedar House.
Police rushed there.
Inside basement they found Emma’s beige coat.
May you like
And another wedding ring.
Identical to hers.
