Chapter 4 - Claire’s Mother

Claire’s mother was Susan Reynolds.
Alive.
Sixty-seven.
Retired family-law attorney.
She had never met David until three years after Rachel died.
At least that was what Claire believed.
Susan arrived at mansion furious.
“I never signed anything for Rachel Bennett.”
Infrared scan revealed more letters:
C. RE—
Not S. Reynolds.
So Claire’s assumption was wrong.
The signature was not Susan.
Another false trail.
Claire looked relieved.
David did not.
“Who were you expecting?”
Claire admitted Susan had worked on sealed guardianship cases around time Ethan was born.
She had once mentioned Carter family.
Claire never asked why.
Susan reluctantly explained.
Her firm represented nonprofit called Haven Bridge.
Haven Bridge arranged temporary guardianships for parents facing medical crises, domestic danger, or immigration complications.
Rachel contacted them shortly after Ethan’s birth.
Why?
Susan did not know details.
Conflict rules prevented her from handling case personally because Carter Foundation donated to Haven Bridge.
Another attorney handled it:
Caroline Reed.
C. Re—
The concealed signature likely Caroline Reed.
Where was Caroline?
Dead?
No.
Alive in Arizona.
They contacted her.
Caroline remembered Rachel instantly.
“She was terrified.”
“Of me?” David asked.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Caroline refused to answer without reviewing old files.
She did confirm declaration was not paternity document.
It was protective custodial instrument.
Rachel wanted contingency plan if something happened to her.
David asked:
“Why wasn't I told?”
“Rachel requested delay.”
“Why?”
Caroline’s expression changed.
“Because she believed someone in your family would challenge custody using biology.”
There it was again.
Biology.
David asked directly:
“Am I Ethan’s biological father?”
Caroline answered:
“I never saw a DNA result.”
Not answer.
Then she found old index.
Rachel’s file included sealed Appendix C.
Current location:
Carter Family Foundation archive.
Claire had searched there.
No Appendix C.
But access log showed it removed eight months ago.
User:
HENRY CARTER.
Impossible.
Henry had been dead five years.
Someone was using dead man’s credentials.
David looked toward Michael.
Michael shook head.
Not him.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“Grandpa Henry’s name is on Mom’s birthday card too.”
David turned.
“What?”
Ethan ran upstairs and returned with old card Rachel had kept.
Inside:
For Ethan, when you're old enough to ask why Henry helped us.
Love, Mom.
Beneath it, in Henry Carter’s handwriting:
I kept my promise.
David stared.
May you like
His father had apparently made a promise to Rachel.
A promise David had never known existed.
