Chapter 2 - Rachel Bennett

Rachel Bennett had been twenty-nine when Ethan was born.
She and David never married.
Their relationship had been intense, brief, and complicated.
David remembered the day she told him she was pregnant.
“I’m keeping him.”
David had answered immediately:
“Then I’m staying.”
Rachel laughed through tears.
“You don't even know if you're ready.”
“I'll become ready.”
For Ethan’s first four months, they tried.
Then Rachel changed.
She became secretive.
She received calls she would not explain.
She began asking David strange questions about Carter family records.
One night she disappeared with Ethan for forty-eight hours.
When she returned, she refused to say where they had been.
Three months later she left David permanently.
Ethan was eleven months old.
Rachel allowed David regular contact.
Then, when Ethan was almost two, Rachel died in a verified highway collision.
No ambiguity.
No missing body.
No fake death.
David attended funeral.
Afterward a court recognized him as Ethan’s legal father based on existing acknowledgment of paternity and Rachel’s estate documents.
There had never been a DNA test.
Nobody requested one.
Until Claire.
David confronted her in library.
“You tested Ethan?”
“No.”
“Then what does your paper prove?”
Claire stared at torn document.
“It proves Rachel knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That you weren't supposed to raise him.”
Different claim.
David noticed immediately.
“You said he doesn't belong to me.”
“I said what I had to say.”
“To a nine-year-old?”
Claire looked away.
David’s voice hardened.
“Where did you get this?”
“Your father’s archive.”
David’s father, Henry Carter, had died five years earlier.
His private office remained locked inside family company headquarters.
Claire claimed she found document six weeks ago while reviewing records related to Carter Family Foundation.
Why was Rachel’s declaration there?
“I don't know.”
Who else knew?
Claire hesitated.
“Your brother.”
David’s younger brother Michael.
David called him.
Michael denied ever seeing it.
Then he heard title.
Family Custodial Declaration.
Silence.
“Michael?”
“David, burn it.”
David’s expression changed.
“What?”
“Don't show it to anyone.”
“Why?”
“Because Dad told me if that document ever surfaced, someone would come for Ethan.”
Claire stared at phone.
Apparently she had not known that.
David asked:
“Who?”
Michael answered:
“I don't know.”
Then:
“But Dad didn't hide that paper to prove Ethan wasn't yours.”
May you like
“Why did he hide it?”
“To prove Rachel was afraid of somebody.”
