Chapter 1 - He Doesn’t Belong to You

Ethan’s crying reached David before he crossed the foyer.
The nine-year-old was pressed near the wood-paneled wall, twisting desperately while Claire held him from behind by the shoulders.
“Let me go!”
“You’re not going anywhere.”
Then Claire looked up.
David stood in the dark doorway.
Her hands immediately released Ethan.
The boy stumbled away.
Claire straightened her ivory jacket as if restoring her appearance could erase what David had witnessed.
“What were you doing to him?”
“David, you don't understand.”
She reached for a document lying on the console table.
“He doesn’t belong to you. I have proof.”
David took the paper.
Claire expected him to read the heading.
Instead, his eyes went straight to the bottom.
His expression changed.
He stepped toward her.
Claire backed against the wall.
David pointed to one line.
“Then explain this signature.”
Claire lunged for document.
David caught her wrist.
Her confidence vanished.
Ethan moved behind him.
The boy stared at the page.
Then said quietly:
“That’s my mom’s signature.”
Claire went completely still.
David looked at Ethan.
“You recognize it?”
Ethan nodded.
“She signed my birthday cards like that.”
Claire covered her mouth.
The reaction was too strong for simple surprise.
David let the paper fall.
For nine years he had believed Ethan’s mother, Rachel Bennett, died shortly after leaving David.
He had also believed Ethan was his biological son.
Claire had entered their lives three years later.
Now she had produced an official-looking document apparently capable of destroying that belief.
But the signature she clearly had not expected Ethan to recognize belonged to Rachel herself.
David picked the document back up.
At top:
FAMILY CUSTODIAL DECLARATION.
Most of second page was missing.
One sentence remained visible:
I, RACHEL BENNETT, CONFIRM THAT DAVID CARTER IS NOT—
The rest disappeared beneath a torn edge.
Claire whispered:
“You’re reading it wrong.”
David looked at her.
“Then give me the missing page.”
Claire said nothing.
“Where is it?”
“I never had it.”
Ethan wiped his face.
Then he pointed toward Claire’s handbag.
“She did.”
Claire turned.
Ethan continued:
“I saw her tear it this morning.”

And David realized Claire had not brought him proof.
She had brought him only the half she wanted him to see.
