Chapter 3 - The Missing Half
The document was examined professionally.
Claire had torn it that morning.
That much forensic analysis confirmed.
But document itself was genuine.
Paper nine years old.
Rachel’s signature highly likely authentic.
Not forged.
The surviving sentence was exactly as David had seen:
I, RACHEL BENNETT, CONFIRM THAT DAVID CARTER IS NOT—
The missing section mattered.
Claire claimed she tore it because she panicked after reading first page.
David did not believe her.
“You wanted me to think sentence ended with ‘Ethan’s father.’”
Claire said nothing.
“That was deliberate.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I needed you to keep Ethan inside the house.”
David stared.
Claire explained she received anonymous message that morning:
IF DAVID TAKES ETHAN OUTSIDE AFTER 6 P.M., THE DECLARATION BECOMES PUBLIC.
“You assaulted him to keep him here?”
“I grabbed him.”
“He was terrified.”
“I know.”
“Don't minimize it.”
Claire lowered eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Why not tell David?
Because message specifically warned:
TELL DAVID AND HIS SON LEARNS WHAT RACHEL SIGNED.
Claire feared document would expose Ethan’s parentage publicly.
So she chose control.
Bad choice.
Then investigators recovered fragments from Claire’s office shredder.
Not missing half.
Only photocopies.
Someone had delivered complete declaration to Claire six weeks earlier.
She scanned it.
Later original second page disappeared.
Who took it?
Home security showed Michael entering Claire’s study three weeks ago.
Michael admitted.
He had taken second page.
Why?
“To protect Ethan.”
From what?
Michael finally produced it.
David expected answer.
Instead second page created bigger mystery.
Sentence continued:
I, RACHEL BENNETT, CONFIRM THAT DAVID CARTER IS NOT TO BE INFORMED OF THE CHILD’S CUSTODIAL DESIGNATION UNTIL THE ATTACHED MATERNAL CLAIM HAS BEEN RESOLVED.
Not:
David Carter is not Ethan’s father.
Claire had manipulated fragment.
David was furious.
But what was “custodial designation”?
Michael didn't know.
Second page referenced Appendix C.
Missing.
Signature Rachel Bennett.
Witness:
Henry Carter.
David’s father.
And another signature blacked out with ink.
Ethan stared at Rachel’s signature.
“That’s Mom’s.”
Then at hidden witness.
“Who’s that?”
Nobody knew.
Forensics found black ink had been added after Rachel’s death.
Someone deliberately concealed third signer.
Under infrared imaging, only first initial emerged.

David noticed.
“Why does that scare you?”
“Because whoever signed it…”
